New to Southern California... Tell me about these areas!

Hi Ladies!

My husband and I moved to southern California last week, due to DH's job / promotion.  We are currently in Irvine, which is where DH works.  We have furnished corporate housing for up to 2 months... and while that is great, we are anxious to get our own place.  However, I am a little confused about what area we should be looking in.

We will be renting, and it needs to  be in a very safe area since DH travels for work a great deal and I will spend much time there alone.  We have friends in Mission Viejo (they moved at the same time, and for the same reason we did) and that seems like a nice area.  We know we do not want to be in Santa Ana or Costa Mesa.

What can you tell me about these area...

  • Mission Viejo
  • Aliso Viejo
  • Racho San Margarita
  • Fullerton
  • Huntington Beach
  • Newport Beach
  • Lauguna Niguel
  • Foothill Ranch
  • Lake Forest
  • Dana Point

THANKS!

  • Check out this thread - it's very recent and hopefully it's helpful.  I answered in there with some of the neighborhoods you reference.

I live in Costa Mesa and I love it. I literally do not ever want to move away from here, and I would choose it over pretty much everywhere on your list, so I'm no help.

    Right?

Certain parts of Santa Ana, I understand. However, no Costa Mesa? I'm lost.

  • Also, most of your areas are in coastal and south county. You do realize that Fullerton is much more inland?
  • hell, fullerton's practically I.E.

    *gasp*

  • I moved there for DH's job too last year.  We lived in Trabuco Canyon and it has amazing views of the canyons.  Very safe.  I felt safe there when DH was traveling.  It's right by Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Foothill Ranch.
  • Here is a sample list of homes for rent in the area.  We were in the mid range of prices here and it was still a really nice area.

    Right?

I spent most of my teenage years in Costa Mesa and I loved it. There's nothing wrong with CM, there are even million dollar houses by the Mesa Verde Country Club (if you're hoity toity) or even an equestrian neighborhood by the Newport Beach Golf course AND it's still considered CM.

I now live in Dana Point of course and it's amazing. Would much rather be where I live now then where I did. Granted I don't have any kids and don't know about the school systems but the whole time I've been in Dana Point I've never seen a school! Haha.

  • I have lived in Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, and now Midway City.  The two places I have loved living in the most are Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa.

I am curious as to why Santa Ana and Costa Mesa are out of the question?

    This!

  • As far as Santa Ana, my only experiences it before deciding on where to live were going to the courthouse and a few other areas.  Based on that, I knew I didn't want to be there.

CM is fun and there is a LOT of stuff to do and places to eat, but I am a nervous Nellie on the road and I found it too crowded/busy for my taste, I'm more of a cookie cutter type, admittedly.

But then again, I am a bubble girl.  I would at least check these places out before totally ruling them out.  People told us MV and most of south county were too stuffy, but we checked it out anyway.  Come to find out, it was just what I was looking for.
