Any food or tradition that is a local to you?
Just curious about way out there in the other parts of the world. There are a lot of cajun and southern traditions that take place around Christmas here. Is there anything local for you?
For example, we have a lighting of the levee on Christmas Eve where people build these HUGE wooden structures on the levee of the Mississippi River and light them that evening. It is a big event that runs ALL the way down the entire levee for miles in all parts of Louisiana and it is said to "light the way for Papa Noel (Santa)"

Although Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is widely recognized for its Christmas attractions, the city's New Year's Eve Peep drop has been a sweet tradition for three years running. During Bethlehem's First Night celebration, a 25-pound fiberglass illuminated Peep is dropped from a crane at midnight. With as many as 30,000 people expected this year, entertainment starts early in the afternoon with tons of family-friendly entertainment, including a performance from children dressed as "peep-ettes."
That is cute! We don't have much for Christmas Day, itself, but we also have a bit Christmas fest-being in Bethlehem and all... crafters, musicians, etc.. horse drawn carriages (but I liked the Peep thing!)... every weekend from Thanksgiving up to Christmas.
I have to rely on Agent for this one since its my 4th Christmas in Phoenix, and I have no idea if there is anything really cool and regional here. When I lived in Ventura County, CA they had the holiday boat parade at the harbor that was always really fun. I miss living by the water
They light the liberty pole here. It's just a large flag pole with lights strung out to look like a christmas tree at night. It's lame. It's in the part of the downtown area where there is nothing but 9-5 jobs so noone sees it lit up. It would make better sense to do this closer to the resturants and stuff. but what do I know.
OH my favorite non local tradition is the Cajun version of Twas the night before christmas. I have my santa and his alligator ornament up on my tree.
I've seen it! Maybe it's a midwest thing then.
Aw. Maybe someday you can visit me in the M-Mac. We have a parde early in December too!
Well, I'm an all over SoCal girl. And there are just so many traditions.
For my family - the aforementioned Canadian Butter tarts are important.
I know it's Christmas when I see:
Decorations down Wilshire Blvd (this is Rodeo Drive, which is "on" Wilshire)
There's a Metrolink Holiday Train
Hollywood Christmas Parade (I've been caught in it's traffic! Never live in Hollywood!)
There's a boat parade in Newport Beach that I've never been to but everyone goes...
They decorate my building at work (yes this is my building):
We always get pixie sticks in our stockings (among other things)
And have orange danish for Christmas breakfast
And Surfing Santa is kind of big
My hometown is boring & out in the middle of nowhere. It's not even a town.
There is a lot of stuff going on in philly. Santa was famously booed in the parade a few years ago! They've thrown snowballs at him too. I've only been here 3 years, Bella would know more specifics of what goes on.
The WORST is the Mummers on new years. They scare the crap out of me.
I don't know of anything in my immediate town.
But, since I'm not too far away... DC always has the national Christmas tree lighting and state trees display.
We're pretty boring in Titusville. They have a parade the second Saturday of December. And Port St. John (not a real city, a port or having anything to do with a St. John) has a parade the third Saturday in the morning (I grew up in PSJ, but its like 10min from Tittyville.
In San Francisco they light up the Embarcadero buildings at night during Christmas, so beautiful.
