GTA Ladies ~ recommend your area

DH and I are starting to plan our move, and just don't know where to move to. DH's office is in Mississauga but he does NOT like Mississauga so def not there. All I need is to be pretty much near a subway and/or GO Train. DH said he would like to be near the 401 as well.

We are just in the beginning of the moving process but completely lost on the different areas.

TIA

Re: GTA Ladies ~ recommend your area

  • Well I live in North West Mississauga so I am not much help for my area Wink

Where about is his office?  There are some areas of Etobicoke that are nice.  What does he not like about Mississauga?  Just so we know what you are not looking for.

  • I live in North Etobicoke and it is pretty good value for the $. Very convenient location for us - I work in Mississauga and DH works in Markham. It is near Etobicoke North GO train on the Georgetown line (7 minute drive) - I haven't taken it but my brother has because he stayed at our house for a bit and he works downtown - he said it was pretty good but runs only during rush hours. We are North of the 401 by about 2km and south of the 407 so DH takes the 407 if the traffic is really bad. We live right on bus service that goes to the bloor/danforth subway station but it's about 25 minutes to the subway station depending on traffic, because it seems to hit every red light :P and then the subway is another 30 minutes or so to yonge station, so it depends where you are going and how much of a commute you are willing to have.

If you want to share your budget and the size/type of house you are looking for then maybe it will help narrow down an area. For example, if you want to live close to a subway it will cost a LOT unless you are willing to downsize and/or live in a semi, townhouse or condo. Also you may want to consider the schools if you are planning staying for awhile since you have a little one. If you want to do public schools, the schools around my neighbourhood are not stellar, although have not looked into it in detail since we don't have kids yet so it will be a long while before they are school age.

Our primary "wants" for a house were location (convenience to work), detached and nice/big yard.

Things to consider that we didn't really consider before moving here... We also really like our area because we can walk to lots of conveniences (2 grocery stores, shoppers drug mart/post office, banks, pizza place, blockbuster video, lots of restaurants) which is a really big perk. A lot of suburbs are kilometres away from the nearest stores. We are also within a block of the humber river bike paths and various parks.

  • The reason why DH doesn't like Mississauga it's because he's not a fan of the traffic there.

As for what we are looking for, we are willing to spend a good amount. I live in a semi and would like to move to a fully detached home. It doesn't have to be big. I'm good with anything from 1600-2000 sq ft.

I'm big on location and convience like able to walk to stores etc. We will be sending our kids to catholic school so something close to that as well (walking distance would be great).

I would like to be close to walking areas because DH and I like to walk and it would be great with the LO.

  • I love both Burlington and Oakville (in that order).
  • We moved to Mississauga in September. We are just outside of Port Credit and walking distance to Port Credit Go station. We LOVE it here. DH drives to Vaughn every day for work and it only takes him 30 minutes. I work from home but walk to the lake almost every day and shop in Etobicoke. We never thought that we would move to Mississauga but we are so happy that we did. DH actually lived in Mississauga with his ex so I swore I would never move here in a million years. LOL  Surprise

At first we were very overwhelmed with all of the different areas but after driving around going to open houses for months we decided that this was the place for us.

    Good luck with your search!

  • hmm there is going to be traffic everywhere in the GTA, but Mississauga definitely has some bad areas (I'm thinking Mavis and 403/ Eglinton area is nuts whenever I have been there) I used to live by Square One and the 403 between Hurontario (hwy 10) and the 401 was pretty good to get to work (I work in Mississauga but near the airport).

There are schools everywhere so you can get walking distance to schools anywhere, ditto with parks. You will have to narrow down a general area and then use parks & schools to narrow down to specific streets in that neighbourhood.  Are you going to continue working downtown after mat leave?

  • We lived in Mimico (royal york/queensway) for years and loved it. Too pricey in the end for what I wanted, but had a modest budget. Royal York/Bloor is a great area with good nieghbourhoods and schools... I'm a fan of that part of Toronto.?

I agree about Port Credit too - gorgeous part of Mississauga and it's a little but removed from the heavy traffic

  • I moved to Hamilton from Oakville 5 years ago and love it.  i commute on the Lakeshore go line everyday and its not too bad if you take the express from oakville.

Oakville and Burlington are very highly priced although you can get property if you look hard enough.

Hamilton, you can get a fairly decent house with nice property. The prices are rising since alot of commuters are moving here because of its affordability and nice pockets.

Also to note,  we live pretty close to locke street. which  has many different shops and resturants and wonderful boutiques.

Also has like 6 different public/catholic schools in the area.  We actually live across from a catholic school.

  • I grew up in Markham and I LOVE it. The houses (and community) are really nice. The people are wonderful. The GO is right down the street. The 401 is near too. 407, 404, and all the major highways are very easily accessible.

If you want specifics, let me know.

I live in Toronto now though.

  • I'm in Milton

Fastest growing community, very baby and kids friendly, and if you're in the Main/Thmompson/Derry/Steels area you can walks basically to all the stores

GO right smack in the mildle of the town so if you're in the area I mentioned above you can walk there too

We have a great small community feel but with all the convieniences of a bigger town

Local trips to the farms in the summer are basically down the street (kids love it )

and we have miltonmoms and that can be great :)

     LOVE Milton

  • If you want to live in Toronto, look at Main and Danforth or the Upper Beach.  There's a subway station and Go station.  Its a great neighbourhood that still has some good deals.
