Baby name vent

Initially I had been telling people the name we chose for our baby but then B said he didn't want to tell people until after she's born.  No idea why.  So I stopped telling people so most people don't know...just a handful, really.  Well, his cousin got a dog for Christmas and they named her our baby's name!!! UGH!  I'm SOOOOOO annoyed.  I know it's not her fault and she didn't steal our name because she doesn't know that that's what we're naming her, but still...it's a name that is not common and no one I know has a baby with this name.  I've never even seen any of our babies in the NICU with the name.  We had to go to their house for dinner tonight and they kept calling the puppy by name and it drove me NUTS to hear them calling the f-ing dog by our baby's name.  I seriously almost lost it.  Thank God we only see them around the holidays.  I refuse to call that dog by name, ever.

Re: Baby name vent

  • Ugh, that is extremely frustrating! It's hard enough to come up with a name both you and your hubby love, then to have someone close to you use it (for their own kid or animal).

Are you still going to use it? Personally, I still would use it and if the cousin questions it, mention that it's the name you had picked out for awhile before she got the dog and you didn't want to say anything when she used your baby name for her animal.

I remember being "ugh" when someone I know online used the name Maya for her dog...and that's only someone I know online lol!

  • How weird that they ended up using the same (unusual) name!

Is it definitely THE name you're going to use? What I mean is, do you think you'll change it now, or stick with the name you've chosen? If you really love it, I'd use it anyway. How often do you seen the cousin (and, by default, their dog)? I'm hoping it's infrequently enough that it won't be too much of an issue if they have the same name.

If it makes you feel any better, one of Ben's parent's dogs has the same name as one of the names we've picked for our boys (well kind of - it's a shortened version, like Bob for Robert, but basically it's the same name). We're still using it. Stick out tongue

  • I was thinking about this while I was putting Maya down and thought "Josh and I have picked out an uncommon girl's name too, for if we have a girl...wouldn't it be funny if it was the same name as yours".

Our girl's name starts with 'S'...I don't think you'd have the same name picked out but stranger things have happened lol!

  • LOL! I wonder why parents get so proprietary over names. My parents were really possessive about mine and it ended out... well, I think it's funny! My middle name is Jean (and my first one is Alyson), and my Dad has a cousin named Jeannie, but he and my Mum figured using the name as a middle one would be fine. So, that's what they named me.

That's when it's revealed to my parents that my Dad's cousin's name isn't actually Jeannie - that's her middle name. Her first name is Allison. At the end of the day, I think it's hilarious, and it's never bothered me.

I'm sure your daughter'll love the dog and think that it's awesome that they share a name.

  • haha this is so funny...we are your cousins...   we named our dog Beatrice just because we liked the name.  Then one of Tim's best friends (and the best man at our wedding) told us that he and his wife had always planned to name their daughter Beatrice, after her grandmother, if they had a daughter.  I think he was a little pissed that we "took" the name for our dog, but he didn't ask us to change it, and at that point we'd had Bea for a couple months so it would have been really weird to call her something else at that point.

lo and behold, our friends had a baby girl in May, and her name is Beatrice, and now we have the two Beas.  (one of our mutual friends thought that they had named their daughter after our dog!!!)

    so, I'm sorry.  :(

  • We're still going to use the name because we've been set on it for a LONG time and I just can't imagine changing it now.  We decided on it before we knew for sure she was even a girl and we've been calling her by name for a while.  B's going to tell his mom and have her mention it to his aunt.  I'm hoping they'll change it on their own because they've only had the dog for 4 days and it doesn't even know it's name yet.  But if they don't, I want them to know that we chose that name a long time ago.  I guess I should feel better that at least the spelling is different.

We do see them infrequently, but I know when the baby arrives his aunt is going to want us to bring her over because she loves babies.  Maybe it's just the hormones, but I'm really irked by the whole thing and now I wish he would have just let me tell everyone her name so this wouldn't have happened to begin with!  Grr.

Tina, our name doesn't start with an S so no worries there.  =P

  • Funny story, I went over to a co-workers house when Bella was about 3 months old to visit her and her new baby. We had talked MANY times at work about my DD's name and she never once said anythign about it... we got to their house and I heard the husband say "Bella stop that"... I'm sure I had an odd look on my face and my co-worker/friend said that they've had their dog for 5 yrs and she didn't have the heart to tell me before I visited that it was their dogs name. Her DH said "is it Isabella or Isabelle? I said nope just Bella. Her husband apologized!! I said "no worries"... It was a little odd but then again we've had Bella picked out since we started dating many years ago and there would've been NO WAY that we would've changed it based on someone's dog!

Besides my Bella's cuter and way more fun :)

LOL!  We have a cat named Bella and she's about 7 years old...Joseph named her after an aria he was singing at the time in the opera he was in...her full name is Bella Fortuna (Beautiful Luck) but I think of it as Bella For Tuna because she LOVES to eat!

These days many folks delay or don't have kids at all so their pets are their babies and named accordingly.  I know someone who named their dog Michael.   I am sure there are kids out there named Regina and Luigi (which are our pug's names).  Gone are the days of pets name Whiskers or Sport.  LOL!

  • Well, I know how ya feel anyway, Christine. I have a feeling they won't change their dog's name so it'll probably be a case of your daughter sharing it with the cousin's dog lol.

My sister has had a girl's name picked out for the last, oh, 9 years or so and hasn't had a chance to use it yet because she had two boys. She's a single mum but still holds out hope that one day she'll meet some nice guy, have a daughter with him and call her Kaiah (pronounced 'Ky-ah").

I, on the other hand, had loved the name Maya for the past 8 years or so (ever since I first saw it when Uma Thurman named her daughter Maya Ray) and had it in my head that, if I ever had a daughter, that's what I'd name her. I just hoped the father of that daughter would like it just as much and agree to it lol.

So, when Josh and ever discussed kids (before we fell pregnant), I asked him what he thought of 'Maya' for a girl and he loved it. So, that's the name we agreed on.

When Maya was born and her name was revealed....oh was my sister pissed OFF! She still brings it up every now and then, in a "I'm still not impressed you ripped off my name but I'll play it off jokey-style" kind of way.

It just irked me that we were made out to be name thieves because Maya sounds too close to Kaiah. If I had named her 'Kaya', I'd suck it up and say "Ok, I ripped it off" but Maya and Kaiah are two completely different names.

LOL! I wonder why parents get so proprietary over names. My parents were really possessive about mine...

For some parents, they love a name because of it's significance in their lives, or the meaning, or the way it sounds, and for others the attraction is simply because a name is unique - that's the main reason they love it, so if someone else uses the same unusual name, it makes it less special, in a way.

Speaking for myself, I don't really care if other people (not close friends or immediate family) use the same names as us, either for pets or kids. Stick out tongue One of the boy names we chose is very classic and popular (and has been for like the last 300 years lol), so I know that we'll absolutely meet many people who have chosen the same name.

The other name we've picked is pretty unusual (odd that we went with one super popular and one super rare name, eh?)...but even so, I can't say I'd necessarily be upset that someone else used it unless it was an immediate family member or very close friend, in which case I would feel obliged to change it to avoid confusion - and then I might be cranky lol.

  • Yeah, that kinda sucks that they named their dog the same name as your LO. Do you think that if you guys told them the name ahead of time, then they wouldn't have used it? I dunno, maybe you guys want to talk to the cousin soon if you want to ask them to change it, because the sooner the better, especially if they're training it early and the dog may catch on to their name already. We actually changed our pup's name a few days after we got her, so it happens...she never responded to the old name at all before anyway, so it had no impact at all. And even if they refuse to change the dog's name, I wouldn't change your LO's name because you guys already picked it and I wouldn't let other people's opinions or naming of their LO/pets take that much precedence over the name you've decided for your little girl. Plus, I know this is a morbid thought but the dog will only live ~15 years or something so your daughter won't share a name with it forever =P

  • awww... I can see how you are annoyed but at least they didn't take it, knowing that was the name you had chosen.  even if they don't change the puppy's name at this point, at least you don't see them often and have to deal w/hearing the name associated w/the dog all the time...... now i'm curious about what the name is :)

  • Aw, I'm sorry.  I would be so so disappointed, too.  We aren't set on names, but sometimes I tell our favorites.... and if either one was used by someone close to us, I would be really bummed.  Not because we "own" the names (obviously there are way too many people in the world for you to be the only one using it), but because you want it to *feel* special and unique and made-just-for your baby... and in the family/social circles you hang out in.

At the end of the day, though, it's still your baby's name, decided on with lots of love and care from mom and dad, and it doesn't matter that the puppy shares it.  Use it anyway, and just refer to the doggie as "puppy" or "sweetie" or "'lil girl."  That's what I do whenever I forget a dog's name!  Stick out tongue

  • Okay, so you're not going to believe it but the name is KAYA!  I figure I might as well just tell you all since it's getting out IRL anyways.

Sorry Tina's sister!  And I don't mind that Chika's dog's name is Kaya.  It's just that it's his cousin and I had to keep hearing them call the dog for 2 hours last night.  And I'm sure they wouldn't have picked it if we had told them before that that was going to be her name.  Apparently, the whole family sat down and chose the name together so the chances of them changing it now are slim to none.  They spell the dog's name Kaia, though.  But still, I don't know if I'll ever not be irritated by it.

Part of why I loved the name was because no one that I know personally had a kid or animal named Kaya and it's not common (although it is in the top 100 in Hawaii).  We got the name from the Bob Marley song.  We were listening to it and I just said "What about Kaya?" and B said he liked it.  Another weird thing is that when I told my BFF that we liked that name for a girl she said when she was pregnant with her first (who turned out to be a boy) she was going to name her Kaya if it was a girl.  (We weren't speaking at the time so I had no idea.)

ETA: The BFF crossed Kaya off her list after her BIL's sister named her daughter Kaya.  Good thing I don't know her either!

AND I found out that B has another cousin with a dog named Kaiah.  Weird!

Yes, to these especially.  I feel like they took something special away from me, honestly.

And I'm never, EVER calling that dog Kaia.

  • Love that name!  I'd actually considered it as a middle name to go with our current girl's name front-runner... don't worry, though, it's a no-go from us.  :)

And I don't think I know any kids IRL with that name!  YAY!

    Thanks for sharing!  It's beautiful!!!

LOL! OH wow, go me for inadvertantly mentioning it! Haha.

It IS a gorgeous name and you should still absolutely call your daughter that!

  • It's a beautiful name!!!

though I have to admit that my friend also has a dog named Kaya Embarrassed (not sure how they spell it though)

  • Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I'd only heard the name b/c it's Cindy Crawford's daughter's name.  Don't know anyone else, though!  :)

  • O M G ! ! ! ! ! !

I am dying over here. I read your post that the name was Kaya and thought you were joking. I started cracking up so much DH came over to find out what was so funny.

We both agree that Kaya is a beautiful name! But not nearly as beautiful as your daughter will be...... It's still unique because there will never be another Kaya in the world just like your Kaya. She will be the only her - ever. :-)

And that is freakin weird about all those dogs named Kaya! But I bet you'd find that with any name. Honestly. If I looked hard enough, I'd find a bunch of dogs named Alexa too, I bet.

Speaking of... I have a friend who is older and single with no kids. She just got a dog and named it Sophie. I remember thinking thank goodness we are not using that name, which I love, because she just ruined it for all of her friends by naming her dog that and she should have known better!

  • I'm glad you're still naming your baby girl Kaya, it's a very pretty name. This whole post is so funny (to me, not to OP I'm sure). We were thinking of naming our boy Christopher Kai but changed our minds to Christopher Ryan (because I have an EX friend named Kylin and it was too close to that). Our son will go by his middle name so he was almost a Kai.

If we have another boy one of his names might be Levi, which is our dogs name, is that horrible? I'm okay with any dogs having the same name as our children but not some humans. For example, DH wanted to name our future daughter with the middle name Rose but I HATE that name because I went to school with a mean, smelly, chubby girl in the sixth grade with that name (sorry to anyone w/ that name...just an example).
