Transfering itunes library between computers

What is the best way to do this w/out the ipod? Only have the option of burning to a CD/DVD or a flash drive? Then, how do you get the tracks to move to the new library named? DH couldn't figure out how to do it where the tracks came across with their names instead they are called Track 1, Track 2, etc.

TIA!

Re: Transfering itunes library between computers

  • I just did this, since we got a new laptop.

What I did was burn data DVDs with my old library and then added the folder to the new iTunes.

Under the preferences make sure to select the option to have iTunes organize the folders, and also select the option to copy to the files to the iTunes directory.  That way you can just select the music right off of the disc and it will copy it.

As long as the data about the track names was stored with the file originally, it should transfer over without any problems.

If you're still having issues, contact the iTunes support, they'll arrange a time to call you, so you're not stuck on hold for ever.

Oh, and if you have any purchased music from iTunes, you'll need to authorize the new computer.

  • I have only done it using the instructions for using an iPod on the Apple website...but I believe that when I did it, I was basically just using my old iPod (first generation) as a flash drive, so I don't see why you couldn't do it that way.  I do remember it being a multi-step process...did you try googling it?  This might help...http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/789495/how_to_transfer_your_itunes_library.html

And if you're not using the old computer any more, you can de-authorize it (you can only have up to 5 authorized computers).

  • If you have a home network, you can also set up your current iTunes folder as a shared folder and copy directly from old computer to new computer over the network.  Sometimes this is faster than burning to CD/DVD.

  • I'm trying to do the same thing, and I've been having some serious problems getting my songs to load on my laptop after I copy them. I tried first using memory cards, and I thought that I imported them properly, but evidently I only imported the song data, but not the song, so when I went to play the songs it tried to find them on my memory card. No Good

So then I put my songs on CDs, well now my loptop wont read the CDs.  The songs are there, they'll play in my DVD player, but the laptop doesn't even recognise that there is a CD in the drive.

I'm pretty sick of this!  Is there anyway to directly transfer files from my computer to my laptop, say using a USB cord?  That may be a really dumb idea, so laugh at me if you want, but I just am pretty tired of trying to move these songs only to be shut down everytime.

    Thanks!

  • My itunes has a share feature that will show up on any other computer near you (of course you have to allow it). I have a mac so I dont know if there is a different version for windows but my DH and I can share stuff we get in the iTunes store this way.

Yes, there's a cord out there I used when I moved off my desktop to my laptop. I have a different brand, but this should do exactly what you're describing here.

Another way to move your iTunes Library would be to back it up to your CDs/DVDs, flash drive, or an external HD and then "restore" your library on the new computer...

We just did this with Windows based computers. You just have to turn on Home Sharing (there should be a Share option on the left hand side somewhere under Library). It was super easy.
