I started my own wedding planning business, which is actually how I found out about this great website! I never knew the Knot had other sites for different stages in life!
I have been doing wedding planning for awhile now and decided to branch out on my own. It's called C.A.K.E (short for Christy Ann Kahana Events).
One of the main reasons I started it is to get out of corporate america. I've had a full time job in HR for about 8 years now and I went to school with the goal of starting my own business, I just never did it. My wonderful hubby finally encouraged me so I did it this year.
So far, I'm doing tons of marketing (facebook, twitter, www.cakeweddings.com) and I've done 2 weddings this year, got 2 booked for next year and a consult I'm hoping to book for next year as well!

I've actually DOC'ed a lot of weddings on the side (12+ so far) and had fun doing it but ultimately decided that I didn't want to give up my weekends to do wedding planning full-time. It's fun to do every once in a while though and I like helping brides. I'm actually DOCing and serving as a BM in a wedding this coming weekend--my third time doing both :P

That's so cool! I always thought about doing Event Planning but concierge seemed to call my name.
I've been doing a lot of proposals here at the hotel, though and thought that might be a fun business to get into (professional proposal specialist).
Any advice on how to get the business running? Business plans? SWOT analysis and such...?

I'm at the InterContinental Hotel on the waterfront. Gorgeous hotel with 2 ballrooms that overlook the Fort Point channel.
Laina, what a coincidence! I just talked to someone in your sales group last week to potentially book rooms for my bride and groom in october. They are getting married in a loft space in the fort point channel area.
Oh wow! You'll have to come in for a hotel tour and we can meet up.
