I am going to my cousins bar mitzvah in Phoenix on Saturday.  I have been to a ton before, but never where I had to bring the gift (always my parents).

What is customary? I assumed money, but not sure how much or if I am off base with the money idea.

Re: alethea

  • I'm a fan of money unless you find something personal or have a great gift idea for a 13 year old.  :-) Most Bar Mitzvah tradtionally give a decent portion of any money received to charity, which is part of why a lot of people give money. Also, random Jewish money superstition info - many people give in increments of 18 because of Jewish numerology. I'm pretty sure 18 adds up numerically to the meaning of Life...or something like that.  :-)

Have fun! I haven't been to one in forever!

  • Thanks!!! So I will give $72!  I know for my girl cousin we gave her diamond earrings (my dad did), but I don't like jewelry for boys!
  • Yeah, diamond earring for Bar Mitzvah probably wouldn't go over too well!  ;-)   Have fun!
