Sleep Question

To make a long(er) story as short as possible, I have had sleeping problems since I was about 12 years old.  It has gotten worse as I have gotten older, and I am to the point where I'm out of answers.  Well, I have been for awhile, but I need to do something.

My biggest problem isn't falling asleep, its staying asleep.  If I fall asleep on my own, I will be lucky to stay asleep for anywhere between 1-3 hours.  Once I wake up, I toss and turn for hours and may fall back asleep for a short time, but always get up multiple times throughout the night.  I used to take otc sleep aides and they stopped working, so while seeing my neurologist for migraine issues, she put me on a prescription sleeping medicine (she is also a sleep dr).  I have now been on the rx for over a year (probably more like 2-3) and my sleep is not getting any better.  I have done just about everything I know that I can do, and need some outside help.  I am seriously considering going to a sleep center since I feel like I have exhausted all of my other options.  I have done everything from therapy, medications, exercise, relaxation, reading, you name it.  I know there may be some underlying issue that is causing the root of the problem, and I would like to get to the bottom of it.  I hate having to take a medication every single night to get sleep.  I don't feel rested or refreshed ever, even on the medicine, and I long to feel "normal" again w/ my sleep.

My question is whether any of you ladies may have been through this and found something that really worked or if you had to go as far as seeking professional help what might have worked for you.   I do frequently try to go to sleep w/out the medicine but it makes for a really long night w/ no sleep.  I have been thinking about contacting the Tri State Sleep Disorder Center in Tri-County, so if any of you have been there and can offer some advice, I would really really appreciate it.  You don't have to reply here if you don't feel comfortable doing so.  You can email me at teresa dot gadrow at gmail dot com if you would prefer.  I just need help.  Thank you so much for making it through that!

Re: Sleep Question

  • I would recommend going to a sleep clinic. It seems like the best option.

I will say that when H and I first got together he had to take sleeping pills to sleep. He would toss and turn. I finally told him to cut back on the allergy meds. It worked like a charm.

  • Ditto going to a sleep clinic.  I'd talk to your doctor and go from there.  There are several around town.

It may very well be some other med that's causing the sleep issues... or too much caffeine during the day (which is a vicious cycle!)

  • i see sleepcare diagnostics in mason. while my problems are different than yours (i have sleep apnea and would sleep 12 hours only to not feel rested), they have really helped me. i feel like a different person! i feel like some mental fog has been lifted off me.
