Re: Albuquerque - visiting in Oct
If you're here before Oct 12, definitely check out the ABQ International Balloon Fiesta - http://www.balloonfiesta.com/
In October the aspens will be turning amazing colors up in the Sandias - you can drive on the Sandia Crest Byway - http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2086/ - and take a nice hike along the crest trail at thetop of teh mountain or go up to Placitas and take my favorite trail Piedra Lisa/Canon del Agua. Or take the Sandia Tram (the longest aerial tram in the world) - http://www.sandiapeak.com/ -to the peak for a picnic and hike at the top followed by cocktails at the resteraunt High Finance. If you are an outdoor person. The Sandias and Manzano Mountains are part of Cibola National Forest - http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/cibola/districts/sandia.shtml - and offer great hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. And the City of Albuquerque maintains an open space multi-use trail network on the west side of the mountains and along teh bosque (the cottonwood forest in the middle of town).
Old Town - http://www.albuquerqueoldtown.com/ -is a good way to spend an afternoon. Most of the museums are located along Mountain and Old Town is VERY walkable with small nooks and crannies. Nob Hill - http://rt66central.com/ -is a fun eclectic area of small local botiques, resteraunts and bars, galleries, etc. North Fourth/Los Ranchos - http://www.villr.com/ - has a collection of small shops taht's fun to explore, plus Los Poblanos Cultural Center. And the corn maize should still be up - http://www.riograndefarm.org/maze.html.
Check out the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center - http://www.indianpueblo.org/ - they usually have demonstration, dances, etc. on the weekends. And during the week they run tours to some of the central NM peublos. Definitately take the Acoma Sky City tour if you can.
You can also make a day trip out of going to Santa Fe.
