Does anyone own a Boxer?

We are in South Carolina visiting friends and they have a white boxer (Dave Matthews) that we just love.  We are going to be getting a dog within the next 6 months to a year and are seriously considering getting a Boxer.  Dave is a great dog who wears his personality on his face.  He's great with other dogs, cats and kids, which is important with LO on the way.  And the friends we are visiting have a lot of experience with dogs (they have a Golden Retreiver and a Boston Terrier, too) and say that Boxers are great with kids.

Can you share your experiences with Boxers?  I'm researching puppies and cannot resist their adorable faces!

Re: Does anyone own a Boxer?

  • We don't have one (yet) but we love them too.  We'll definitely be getting a boxer at some point in our lives.  I'm not a fan of breeders/pet stores, but there are a TON of wonderful boxers out there that need homes - check out boxer rescue groups.  They're everywhere!

Also - it would be good to ask the ladies over on the pets board.  They know a ton about this stuff!

    Good luck and have fun!

  • We had two Boxers growing up and they were great dogs.  Ask both owners if they had their dogs trained at all (I would suggest it since they are such energetic dogs).  Beware their flatulence though.  Both our Boxers could suck the oxygen out of a room with their farts.  Brutal sometimes and I heard that Boxers are notorious for it.  They were both great dogs to have around when I was a kid though.

  • We have two. They are loads of fun and definitely both have their own distinct personalities. They are high energy animals who are very intelligent. (No teaching a boxer to play fetch, they get too bored with it!)

Let me know if you have any specific questions!

  • My MIL owns and operates a boxer rescue. Even though we're in Buffalo- she fosters/adopts out all over the state and in PA and OH. She was affiliated with 2nd chance boxer before she opened her own. While growing up DH fostered over 50 boxers. They are very sweet dogs but have SO much energy... seriously SO much. She also has a facebook page and literally could answer ANYTHING about boxers.

  • I've never owned one, but my experience with our neighbors' growing up was that he was a good boy, people-friendly, but barked a lot!
  • I have not had a boxer, but I was a vet assistant before I had DD, and Boxers are great dogs.  They will love you unconditionally, and are very fun and easy going.

That being said, just based on my experience at work; almost all boxers die of cancer.  Unfortunately it is very prominent in the breed nowadays.  I would just do a little research on  the health aspect of the breed, so you know what you might be dealing with.

Most live very long and healthy lives until the disease catches up with them, so its not necessarily something to worry about, just something to take into consideration when choosing this breed.

  • We have a Boxer/Pit mix and he is just the best dog. The one thing that we have learned is that Boxers are notorious for allergies so he does require a special diet. He is great with kids and I have never been worried about him. He is a lover dog and licks like crazy (this is the only thing I am worried about with baby).

With any dog that you get you should consider extensive training and play time. Boxers require exercise and at least in our case if we don't then we come home to some "surprises".

    Happy dog hunting!
