WTF is going on with college football coaches?!

Urban Meyer taking a leave of absence...

Mike Leach getting suspended...

What is going on?!

Re: WTF is going on with college football coaches?!

  • Man...it's been quite the last couple of days. Leach getting suspended right before the bowl game blew my mind. I don't know if I could handle any more college coach stuff.

  • ugh, imagine how much more fun it is BEING a tech fan. Our program was nada before he came along. We've been in a bowl every year he's been a coach. It will be bad, bad, bad if he gets fired.

I'll prob get flamed for this, but my husband says the only thing anyone did wrong in this situation is that we should have an NCAA violation for having a female tight end ;)

I can't flame if I don't get the "female tight end" thing! LOL Just kidding. But seriously... really? (Gah. I hope I don't sound like a sports retard.)

  • Sorry - I forget everyone probably hasn't been diving into every detail of this like I have :)

Leach is suspended for alleged "abuse" to Adam James, a sophomore tight end. He had a concussion, refused to take his sunglasses off, so Leach made him spend a couple of practices alone in a dark room. How long and the conditions of the room are still very much being disputed. The reference was that football is a big-boy game, and maybe Adam's just not tough enough to play it.

(I reserve the right to change my mind if I find out something worse happened to this kid than being told to stand in an air conditioned press room)

Adam James is also the son of an ESPN analyst, and one article I read made it sound like dad was demanding that Leach apologize, Leach refused to, and the university had to suspend him.

Either way, I'm going to see if my sister knows any tidbits she can share (she works in Tech's athletic department)

I am not one to flame, but I think that comment was really immature and downplays the seriousness of concussions. This type of attitude is exactly why football players deny experiencing concussions which can result in severe mental impairment in former players in their 40s.

  • And now Mark Richt is staying at Georgia after he had all but packed away his entire office.
Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

  • It's been a crazy few days!  I can't believe it's all coming out just before the bowls.

I don't usually post on this board but I thought I'd check it out with all of the sports craziness going on - and being a Tech fan I had to comment on this as well...  I completely agree with you CarlaAndJames.  I think this article is a pretty fair assessment of everything thus far... http://www.texasmonthly.com/2010-01-01/webextra.php

I also think that there are a lot of other "health" issues occurring in college football practices than asking someone to sit in a dark room -- how about the players that daily work out so hard they are throwing up while they are forced to keep running or even worse, die from heat exhaustion?

  • I also haven't been on this board much but popped over to see if anything was being said.

The more I'm learning the more this gets worse, apparently James quit the TTU baseball team for lack of play time, but he also wouldn't practice hard or what not.

I'm just really getting sick of the admin messing with him, if you don't like Leach fire him already it's not a secret that Gerald Meyers dislikes him, but either get over it or fire him, but you're going to have a lot of angry fans, including me!!

  • It's crazy to me that Leach (or any coach) would do this at all, let alone to the son of someone who is a nationally known analyst for ESPN. Wtf was he thinking?
  • Annnnnd, he's been canned. Wow. I don't really know a whole lot about Leach, but from what I've seen and whatnot, I always kind of liked him. Sure, he was quirky and odd, but I liked him. Wow.

  • Absolutely screwed the Tech football program -- who would want to come coach for us now that we fire the coach who brought the most wins, most money and highest graduation rate in the history of our school?  It's a good thing we added on to our stadium this year... now we'll have even more empty seats - and not to mention this all happens before signing day.  Goodbye recruits...
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Whoa... Are you seriously blaming the decision makers for this and not the coach?
  • Absoutely.  First of all - where are we in this country when we are guilty without any chance at proving our innocence?  "There's much, much more than meets the eye. The diagnosing doctor has signed a note stating that Adam James was in no way injured by the actions coach Leach took. In fact, he was better off in the building than he would have been outside."

I'm not sure how much you know about the Tech program, but our AD is corrupt - he worshiped the ground bobby knight walked on - let him get away with throwing a salad in public and slapping a player with not even so much as a slap on the wrist, and this suddenly is grounds for firing?   Coaches have done much worse and not been fired.  Are Leach's methods unconventional?  sure - but they are in no way fire-able offenses unless further information comes out.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Whether the AD is corrupt or not, and whether coaches in the past have done worse and not been reprimanded at all doesn't make any difference in Leach's case. If I were that kid's parents i'd be PISSED at that kind of disciplinary action Leach or any coach took on my son. And I definitely think it's a fire-able offense. Sure it's bull that coaches have done worse in the past and gotten away with it, but at some point you have to take a stand and make a move like this. Especially when there seems to be a lot of this kind of thing going around - you don't want to be the program that openly lets coaches do this kind of thing when everyone around you is cleaning house for it.
  • Had he done something that actually caused harm to James, I would completely agree with you.  But, unless some additional information comes out that is contrary to everything so far, I don't think Leach was in the wrong at all.  How is this any different than putting a kid in time-out?  Do you think parents around the country should be thrown in jail and have their kids taken away from them because they spank their children or put them in their rooms because they misbehaved?   James' own doctor signed a statement saying that where he was placed was actually SAFER for him than practicing with the team.  Leach is not the type of coach to tell you to just go home if you're injured - he never has been - and the scores of other players who have been injured have never complained about his methods.  He does nothing to cause them harm, simply tries to work out any healthy part of their bodies - in James' case, his attitude.  He wanted him to WANT to practice as hard as the other players - and according to his reputation, and placement on the team (3rd string) he had no work ethic or motivation to be a team player.

  • UNLV Coach Mike Sanford was fired a couple of months too.
