So, the Doctor's office just called me and told me I do not have gestational diabetes...YAY, but I am slightly anemic...BOO!
They want me to take 325mg of Ferrous sulfate a day, but when I looked it up, the first website I went to said they don't know the effects on an unborn baby or how it effects a breast-feeding baby....Umm...WHAT?!?!
I have to go in to the dr tomorrow morning since I am still having pain when I pee...after taking a weeks worth of medicine to get rid of the bacteria in my pee which causes the pain.
Do you think I should talk to the Dr about the ferrous sulfate and my concerns or just not take it and try and eat more iron rich foods?
Re: Slightly Anemic
Yes, I would talk about the meds with your doctor! Is it possible that the info you read online could be outdated at this point? I would still eat as much iron rich foods as possible, couldn't hurt. As far as the bacteria in your urine, is that related to a UTI? You could try drinking cranberry juice, or taking cranberry pills if you don't want the extra calories and or sugar in your diet.
Congrats on the GD test though!!!
When I was there last week they didn't think it was a UTI, but maybe it has turned in to that...we shall see tomorrow. I've been drinking cranberry juice to help as well, but doesn't seem to be working I guess LOL
Carli -
Iron pills are ok in third tri is my understanding but if you are worried, since you are just slightly anemic you could ask your OB if you can try to fix it with diet first.
Pregnancy?
For ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous sulfate, and iron-polysaccharide
In the first trimester of pregnancy, adequate iron intake is usually obtained from a proper diet; however, in the second and third trimesters, when iron deficiency is more prevalent because of greatly increased requirements, iron supplements may be recommended. However, some clinicians prefer to evaluate the patient before giving routine iron supplementation. {117} {118}
Studies in humans have not been done, and problems in humans have not been documented with intake of normal daily recommended amounts.
I have been taking a natural form of iron (blackstrap molasses) on a daily basis, but as I was reading about ferrous sulfate I read that it shouldn't be taken with other minerals/vitamins....I think that may also have to do with the anemia too.
I think I am gonna switch my regimen around a little....eat some extra iron-filled foods and take my blackstrap molasses in the mornings instead of later with my other vitamins.
I'm definitely gonna talk to the doctor about the concerns I have, and see if we can approach it from another angle than starting to take something different...especially since I am just SLIGHTLY anemic.
You might be able to solve this by taking the ferrous sulfate in the AM and everything else in the PM. Or the other way around depending on what works best for you.
Agreed, talk it over with your OB and make sure they know about what else you're taking!
I agree with PP- I'd talk to the OB and ask if you can try to correct it with diet first.
Yay that you don't have gestational diabetes!
I would definitely talk to your doctor about the ferrous sulfate. Your doctor might have new information on the drug that you can't find on the internet yet or their might be another reason that he/she wants you to take this drug vs. some other drug or treatment.
