My dog is having seizures....Swiffer mop???

Hi ladies,

So last night my husband and I spent 2 hours holding my dog while she acted all irratic and had a seizure.  She has done this before and yes we have rushed her to the ER Animal hospital and they couldn't figure it out etc.  We have switched vets etc.  She hasn't had one since we switched, until last night.  Of course she only has seizures when it is late at night and her vet is closed and we don't want to take her back to the ER.  SOOOO we did some research online and the only thing we can come up with is that she has them after we clean with our floors with out wet swiffer mop.  Then doing more research online, we found MANY pet owners who have had pets who experienced seizures after using their wet swiffer.  A lot of pets have also experienced liver failure and some have even died.  One guy lost his german shepherd and his 2 cats and filed a lawsuit.  I do not know if it is indeed the swiffer wet mop, but we are no longer going to use it and just mop with vinegar and water and see if that helps.  I know a lot of you have cats and dogs and I just wanted to put this out there!

Thanks,

Kristina :)

  • How strange!!! Really?

Thanks for the tidbit of info!  Definitely post on the Pets board!

  • Karen I know you just got a new baby so I just wanted to put that out there.  BURN YOUR SWIFFERS! :)
  • Thanks Foto, I hope so too.

    BURN YOUR SWIFFERS! :)

Don't!  Instead, go to Etsy, search "swiffer cover", buy one you like.  Use that with your vinegar/water mixture...then reuse it over and over again.

  • GOOD IDEA!  Removing swiffer from the flaming barrel.....
  • So sorry to hear that your doggie is having health issues... I hope she gets better soon!

  • Thanks Nicole.  Last night after it stopped she crawled up in my lap and fell asleep.  My poor baby...She is fine today, jumping around and playing.  It usually only happens once a month, and we only mop our floors once a mop.  Ya that's probably bad but oh well...so hopefully this will help.
  • I've read different reports about the swiffer thing but have heard that it is harmless to your pet. I would go to the vet because it may be more than a swiffer

  • Ya I've taken her to the vet and ER clinic multiple times and they have yet to find/prescribe anything. All of these visits add up to a lot of money and it is very frustrating when a vet laughs at you when you explain what has happened.  That is why we switched vets....we only have one er clinic and have taken her there several times and they cannot figure it out.  I also posted this on the "pet board" and now people are now saying that I just let me dog suffer for over 2 hours and didn't do anything etc........um not exactly....
  • ya sometimes people can be a little over the top on that board...love em' to death but sometimes they go around the main issue just to accuse u of not taking care of ur animal. When faced with the same ordeal, a lot of them would prob do the same thing.

  • Sorry about your furbaby... and interesting about the swiffer mop. I'll have to look into it. We use the swiffer mop all the time and we haven't had any issues. But it's definitely something we'll look out for.
  • That is so crazy! I hope your dog is feeling better! We have a swiffer too but its never bothered my dog. Probably because he is scared of it and runs in the other direction whenever I bust it out.
  • Yeah I don't like posting on the Pet board...the few times I had either noone responded (I had genuine questions) or they would be snarky

  • They just ruffled my feathers a bit....it's all good. :)
  • Wow.  I hope it is nothing serious with your pup. Glad to hear he is back to normal now.  Thanks for the heads up on the swiffer issue - it certainly is motivation to break out the steam mop and avoid the chemicals!
  • Ya I am no longer going to use chemicals.  I have no clue if it is because of the swiffer or not but it is worth a try.  I don't think people would make up stories about pets getting sick or even dying just to ruin swiffer product.
  • I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. We had the sweetest black lab at home growing up, and as she got older she would have seizures as well. They were mostly central to her head and never lasted as long as an hour, but it was so terribly sad to see, our vets said it was most likely a brain problem, and at her age would be too hard to operate on. She lived happily for a long time with them though. We all miss her so much though, but I hope the mopping does the trick, its so hard to see!

As a side note- would you mind posting any links you have to this info, my MILs chihuahua has what she says are seizures and I'd like to point this out to her, I'm not sure if she uses a swiffer or not, but I know we do. Luckily (or rather unluckily as I feel most days) we are pet free here.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your doggie but the swiffer thing is not true.  Check here:  http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/swiffer.asp

I also used a swiffer mop for over a year around 2 small dogs and nothing happened.

There are a few food items that cause seizures in dogs so make sure you're not giving them anything like chocolate, grapes, onions, or macadamia nuts.  Also make sure you don't use mulch made with coco (there are some types made from it and dogs do eat it because it smells good).
