Allergic to White Gold (XP) and Hello!

Hi everyone! I'm Allie and was married in October. I'm an active poster on TK, but haven't made it over here yet. =)

I posted this on TK, but thought I would ask here too. My wedding bands are white gold and it turns out that I'm allergic to that (my e-ring is platinum, so that hasn't been an issue). My jeweler said that there wasn't anything I could do in terms of coating it with Rhodium (sp?) because I'm probably allergic to that too. They didn't have a huge selection of platinum wedding bands.  I'm going back tomorrow to talk to the manager, but was just wondering what other people in this situation have done.  Thanks!

TTC since Sept 2009 with PCOS. 3 failed Clomid cycles; 3 failed IUI's; 1 failed injectable + TI cycle. Surprise BFP on 1/22/12 while waiting to start IVF! EDD 9/30/12.
Missed m/c discovered 2/20/12 (8w1d). D&C 2/23/12

  • Have you tried palladium?

  • I have a white gold ering and band. If I don't get them rhodium coated every 6 months, I have a horrible red itchy spot under my ring 24/7. It gets scaly and I can't wear my rings at all. DH got my ring out of state so I just go down to Jared and they do it for $30.

  • Thanks ladies! I haven't looked into palladium but will.

  • i get mine coated in rhodium about every 4 or 5 months and that helps a ton. i take my rings off at night. and i'm very careful to fully dry my hands b/c water left up under my ring makes it worse.

it shouldn't matter what the jeweler has 'in stock' for platinum. i know my jeweler can have pretty much anything made. i'd check prices for platinum and palladium.

  • I was getting the horrible scaly rash under my ring...I found that increasing the size made it better (they were also a little tight).

It's hard to not to wash that area/get it wet, so every time I wash my hands I try to take my rings off and dry very thoroughly, I also moisturize/lotion the area

  • I had this problem, and was able to completely resolve it by having my rings sized up a bit.  It turned out that the main problem was water/soap getting stuck in the grooves of the channel-set band since the rings were just a bit too tight.

  • Oh Allie! I am so sorry! What a pain. You could try maybe selling your ring and then using the money to put toward a platinum one. Is it just a plain band or does it have side stones and such? Hope you get it worked out!
  • I'm allergic to nickel, so I have a hard time wearing gold since nickel is usually mixed in with it.  Try palladium if you can't get platinum.  My engagement ring is white gold, but it's mixed with palladium, so it doesn't bother me.
  • The perp is most likely nickel or some other metal mixed in your ring, not the rhodium coating. If that's true, it won't matter what you coat the ring in...it'll wear off and you'll have another allergic reaction.

The safest bet would be to just get a platinum wedding band. You already know platinum isn't going to cause any issues since it's hypoallergenic. Plus I've heard it's not a good idea to mix metals anyways cuz of wearing issues.

Hope some of that helps and good luck!

P.S. Let us know what you end up picking! :)
