I think I've mentioned on here before that my dog and I went through training to get her certified as a therapy dog. We did this through my work. They are forming a new class and still need a few more dogs. Here is the basic info, if you're interested in doing this with your dog let me know.
Your dog should enjoy being petted /loved by people, and being around other dogs. This class is not designed to deal with behavioral problems with your dog. This is not an obedience class. The dog should already know sit, stay, etc.
The classes will run for 8 weeks . Upon successful completion of the class and test you will be certified to make Pet Therapy visits. There is no cost to owners for the Therapy Dog Training/Certification . We do ask for a $20.00 good faith deposit which is refunded upon completion of your fifth class attended.
All dogs must be a least one year of age by the March 8th testing date.
DATES:
Mondays:
Jan. 11, 18, 25,
Feb. 1, 8, 22, ( There will be no Class Feb. 15 Winter Recess)
March 1, 8, ( test )
TIME: 4:45 - 6:00 pm
Re: Albany Girls - anyone interested in pet therapy
That is a very cool thing to do! I wish I had a dog to do it with
I know the pet therapy dogs are a huge hit at Albany Med. They make a difference, for sure.
LMAO!
Two -- it's something I've thought a lot about doing this year with Guinness, who is really affectionate and will be 3 this month. I was just worried because he's still a little excited/excitable. Loves all dogs, all people, and petting, though.
Can you tell me more about it? Mostly the visits, not so much the class. Where do you go? Hospitals? Nursing homes? How often do you do therapy visits?
