I think I'm going to go test drive some cars this weekend. I have a 99 Honda Civic right now and am wanting to trade it in for some sort of crossover SUV that will eventually be the "family" car for us, two medium-sized dogs, and one day hopefully a baby. Here are the cars at the top of my list... if you have them or considered one of them, what you think of them (pros/cons)? I don't want anything too big because most likely it will be just me or me and DH in the car 95% of the time and I cringe at the though of the gas mileage... but the dogs do take up a lot of room when we travel. Or maybe it just seems that way in DH's little Acura that we use for road trips now. I see how much stuff my SIL's family packs for them and two kids when they come to our house and I don't know where dogs would fit in there (they have a Pilot)!
Volvo XC60
Honda CR-V
Nissan Murano
Subaru Tribeca
Honda Pilot

Re: Car help?
I have a Toyota Highlander and I LOVE IT!!!! I'm not a mom yet but everyone calls it my mommy car because it is very family friendly, even has a third row seat that folds up if you want it. We have packed 7 adults in there comfortably. We have a golden retriever and a black lab and they both fit comfortably in the backseat. I have the cloth (not leather) and I really like that it's different then normal cloth seats, stuff wipes off of it (even dog hair!) more like leather then cloth.
I test drove a pilot before I bought this and it was just to tall for me. The highlander is on a car frame so it feels more like you are in a car then a truck like some of the bigger SUV. Plus better gas mileage.
I have the 2004 model so it's not the newest one but it's still super awesome and the new model is even more awesome.
Good luck in your search!
I forgot about that one! Will add to my list. I hope it doesn't rain today/this weekend because it sounds like I'll have a busy weekend test driving!

test driving is always the fun part! I would recommend a dealership but I found mine from a private seller on autotrader.com
I drool over the XC60- that is definitely my next car! It has City Safety that will prevent a collision, a heart rate monitor in the driver's seat to keep you from falling asleep and blind side indicators that let you know if someone is driving next to you. I like the lower body/ car feeling and it's very roomy inside.
I definitely recommend a test drive.
ETA: I drive a Volvo S60 now and while it has had a few problems, the dealership is fantastic and has always taken good care of me. There's been very little out-of-pocket expense and I'm always provided a loaner car. The only reason I want to trade-in is bc DSS is too big for the back seat and it has a poor turning radius. Otherwise it runs great and is a pretty sweet ride in general.
I'm very Honda-loyal, and test drove a CRV and Pilot before buying my Accord. (My previous car was a Civic!) The CRV is definitely smaller than the Pilot, and while I thought it handled more like a car than an SUV, I think you might have a hard time with it being big enough for a "family" car. I loved the Pilot, and I think it will be my next vehicle. My only issue with it is pretty silly--I think the redesign for 2009 models makes it look just like a Ford Explorer, and I prefer the look of the older models. I still think it will be my first choice when I'm in the market for a new car, though.
I've had a Murano as a rental car, and didn't like it. It's hard to describe--I just didn't think it drove very smoothly. Some friends of mine had one for years, though, and loved it, so. . .

I have an Infiniti FX35 which is the Infiniti version of the Murano and I don't like it. I don't like the ride of the Nissans, it's too truck like for me.
I had a Honda Pilot and I kick myself everyday for not getting another one. I loved, loved, LOVED my Honda Pilot!
The ride was so smooth.
The interior was very smartly designed and held up very well. The back was big enough for two greyhounds to fit, even with the middle seat sitting up. I did have to put all the back seats down to fit three 100 pound dogs, but most people don't have that problem
. The seats go up and down VERY easily. With the seats down, it's more seamless than the Highlander. My two issues with the Highlander were (1) too many places for the dogs to hurt themselves and (2) my friend had one and her interior fell apart.
... what else can I say? I loooooved that car and my next car will be a Honda Pilot!
I owned a CR-V for 7 years, and it was awesome. Great for dogs, big enough for dogs and a kid (IMO). I now drive a Pilot, (an '03, purchased in '08)...bought it with a plan for 2 kids and our 2 dogs (and cat). If you're not a drive a car into the ground type (like we try to be), I think the CR-V is probably better (gas mileage-wise, I got about 27 mpg, compared to the 20 mpg in the Pilot), but if you plan on having more than 1 kid, go with the Pilot.
I don't think I'll ever buy a non-Honda again. They've been so reliable and they just hold the value so much more than most brands.
Both the CR-V and Pilot are Consumer Reports Top Picks.

I went from a Elantra (32-33 mpg) to the Pilot, right when gas prices skyrocketed to almost $4. It was HORRIFYING. Does make it much easier to cope now that it's down to the mid $2s.
Hopefully the shock will eventually wear off!!
