Traveling to the Caribbean

Our friends are trying to plan another trip to the Caribbean in 2011 (8 of us went to Jamaica in '08 and had a blast!).  We stayed at a Sandals that time and really liked it.  They are considering the Dominican Republic for this next trip (Punta Cana).  Sandals are only in the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Antigua, and Jamaica with Jamaica being the cheapest.

I thought that if we stayed at a Sandals again we might be able to use some sort of "rewards program" for being repeat guests.  But at the same time, it would be nice to visit a different island since DH & I have already been to Jamaica 2x and we all went to Jamaica in '08.

Any thoughts if you have traveled to DR before?  Or any other All-Inclusive recommendations?

  • I went to the DR about a year ago and loved it. We stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe resort, in the Ambar section. The Ambar section is adult-only. BEAUTIFUL beach. Can't really go outside of the resort much, ie its surrounded by barbed wire and people said the guards at the resort entrance have guns. But we felt safe there. The resort is huge, they have trams running around to take you to various spots. It has is own shopping court and a small casino.
  • I've heard amazing things about the Excellence Punta Cana resort in DR. It's an AI, I believe it's adults-only and had many choices for restaurants.

I've never been to an AI, and only part of the Caribbean was Puerto rico, so I only have 2nd-hand info!

  • We stayed at Excellence Punta Cana since our good friends recommended it, and it was FAB! We plan to go back when we have more $$!

  • My sister went to Excellence Punta Cana with her friends and loved it!  She said it was a couples resort and AI and not expensive for what you got.  She has wanted to go back ever since she went.
  • Tina...Dumb question for you...

My dh and I have been trying to plan a trip somewhere but worry about brining the baby with us.  Do the Sandals resorts have accomodations for the baby?

Hey Heather!  Sandals is a couples only resort.  But their sister resorts, Beaches, are family friendly.  They have more family oriented activities and also offer a babysitting service so you and DH can go have dinner, or get massages, etc.  Where are you looking to go?  We're bad parents and will be leaving our 1 year old at home with the Grandparents for our 2011 trip.  But s/he won't remember a thing!

  • i'm not sure where we are going to go...right now we are just in the discussing stages.  And you are not a bad mama...my theory is mom/dad need some time too.

I do worry about leaving our little bean b/c a friend of mine and her husband went away for the weekend to Vegas, she said they were both miserable the whole time b/c they missed thier LO so much.

    We'll see.

There are several good places to go with kiddos! We are looking into a quick trip to Mexico late winter/early spring with LO. Beaches is the biggie, but a bunch of less $$$ ones are out there. We went to Palace Resorts for our HM, it was kid friendly and not too $$$.

I can't wait to go on vaca with the boy, it will be a blast!

  • Thank you...i will look into some ideas.
  • I went to the DR in 2006 and stayed at an Eco Resort in Punta Cana, the name totally escapes me now though! I loved the DR but some things to know are that you don't really want to wander off the resorts. It's not the most safe place for tourists on their own. Also, we tipped everyone we met like $1 and you would have thought we were billionaires the way they treated us. I had drinks ready for me at my cabana when I came in the morning and they made them a lot stronger than the ones other people got. HTH
