Want to play D&R?

Sorry for being at total PW, I feel like it is the last day of summer.  Back to work tomorrow Crying

I have not been trying to think about our potential new house because I don't want to jinx it but I am today.  Currently the house is very country (wallpaper, borders) which is not me.  I am making a list of rooms to re-do in my head and the kitchen/dining room are first.  I am thinking of keeping the same color scheme (BM Philadelphia Cream with blue/white, black accents) that I have now because I really like it.

Here is the kitchen - need to remove the border and paint, change out hardware, eventually get new counter tops (some sort of stone or concrete) and install new lighting (some recessed, new ceiling fan).  We need to get a new fridge because they are taking it. I think I will go with stainless (I think it will help add more light) and slowly replace the rest of the appliances with with it.

Here is the dining room which is to the left of the picture above.  I need to remove the wallpaper and chair rail and paint.  I also need to get a new light fixture (taking it, which is ok, it is little country houses).  Our china cabinet and table will go in the same place, side table under the window, cookbook bookcase and picture that are in my kitchen now where that white table is (maybe).  What kind of window treatment would you do?

Re: Want to play D&R?

  • How big is your side table that will go under the window?  Would it leave room for two curtain panels on either side hung on a decorative rod?  That's always my fave for a dining room.  That might also provide some height and spatial balance with your china cabinet.
  • If I use the table I use now for a side table it is about that wide.  It only about chair rail tall though, so there will be a gap of wall above it (below the window).  Do you think that would look ok with long curtains?
  • I think what Jill suggested would work and look the best, even with your table leaving some wall space under the window there.  Do you display anything on the side table?  Trays, framed pictures, or decorative plates/pitchers?  You could hang the panels a bit wide so they just touch the frame of the window or side of the table you plan on putting there, and hanging them a bit high as to almost touch the ceiling would heighten the room.  It's a great space.

Totally agree.  I think if you go with shorter curtains that just reach the table or just a valance, you risk leaning towards the country look again.  If the panels won't work, what about a large roman or bamboo shade?

  • I agree, long panels, hung high and wide would look great there!  I've been thinking about you & hope your house sells soon!

  • What about this for light fixture?  There is a very similar fixture at Lowe's, it has two rows of those lights, actually it is a rectangle of lights like that.  I can't find it online which makes me think I need to go see if they have it on clearance.

  • I love that light fixture!  I hope you can find it on clearance at Lowes!

  • I like it, too!  If you can't find it at Lowes, check Overstock.com.  They have some serious PB knockoffs lately in their lighting section.
