I need something explained to me, FB related

So in an email I got about a facebook message, the bottom of the mail said something like, "You can now tag people in your status updates.  Just type @person'sname."  I've seen a couple of people do this, as in, "@Jane, I miss you!"  I thought this was a Twitter thing.  Don't people's twitter names have the @ in them, and that's where that came from?  Which I never understood to begin with; I just kept seeing people's FB status updates that said stuff like "Had lunch with @JohnDoe today."  Anyway, clearly I don't get it.  Am I just living under a rock that I don't get this?  Or does it really have something to do with Twitter?  I have a Twitter account but I NEVER use it because I think it's dumb.

  • I think if you do it correctly it's suppose to be a linked tag that will take you to that person's facebook page??  But I guess you have to make sure that you enter the name exactly otherwise you won't see the link you'll see the @blahblahblah

Ahah!  That makes a lot of sense now.  Thank you SB. :)

    Yep.

  • I don't know about the linking thing, but it's become a convention to reply to status comments using "@FirstName" if more than one person has commented on your status. It's carried over from Twitter, but it helps identify which comment you are replying to.

  • colliejade - i tagged you in my status yesterday, about the wedding. that's why your name is linked and why my status posted on your wall.

I figured that's how you did it; I just now made that connection!  But I think what I was thinking of at first is what Chicklit said, how people reply to other's comments by saying, "@so-and-so, blah blah..."
