Do you think dogs can sense the growing baby or the upcoming new addition to the household?
Lola has become really needy all of a sudden, and we're wondering what brought the changes on. She usually sleeps outside, but recently she's been whimpering and scratching at the side of the house throughout the night, begging to come back in. She also sometimes assumes these sad, protective positions as if we're scolding her when we try to do normal things like put her out when we leave for work or when it's time to eat. She's 5 years old and has always been very loving and cuddly -- but it seems like she's more anxious and in need of our reassurance these days. She seems to be in normal, good health and nothing else has changed except for the growing belly and the upcoming arrival of the LO. So I wonder....
Re: BR: Did your furbaby "know"?
Hmmm. I don't know. If you're doing things like setting up a nursery, then they'd obviously notice the changes (and some dogs are pretty averse to change). Otherwise, maybe she's picked up on a change in your attitude or physical approach toward the world, or maybe can even hear the baby moving?
Our animals haven't reacted much, although one of the cats likes to sleep on my big fat belly now. It will be interesting to see what happens when the babies start to kick him, lol!
Ours definitely do...they have both been more clingy that before my BFP. I call them my velcro dogs now. Even Regina, who can be somewhat aloof, is all about being in my lap or snuggling up next to my belly. Maybe there's some sort of pheromone that they detect? Luigi is also way more barky now...like any sound at the front door just sets him off (even if it's just the wind). Could be his age (he'll be two on the 12th) but again, it started right around the time of my second tri.
Also, anytime we get a BR item (like the swing, car seat, etc.) they get all excited and smell it, etc. It's actually really cute.

I definately think so. When I was pregnant, Max slept at my belly every night. After Marino was born, I spent 13 days in the hospital and when I came home, he laid next me at my belly and howled for 40 minutes. It was pitiful...I'm not sure if it was b/c he thought I was gone forever or if he thought the baby was gone. Usually he completely ignores babies, but when we brought Marino home from the NICU, he ran up to him when we put the carseat down and immediately started licking his face and whining. It was like he knew who he was immediately.
The transition was smooth until Marino became mobile. Then Max started acting out some. He's a nervous dog by nature, so I think the mobility just caused some anxiety. He's calmed down some since...my biggest issue with the two of them is Marino sneaking Max his food and then Max getting sick from eating it.
