We added a new budget category.

We've tweaked our budget a bit for 2010 and added a "baby category."  Right now we're saving $100/month and I used the baby cost calculator on babycenter.com to attempt to figure out how much we need to save.  We're really only saving for the big items right now (crib, stroller, etc.) so we don't get sticker shock when it comes time to buy them.  Even if my body cooperates and I get pregnant really quickly, since we don't even plan on starting TTC until summer we should have a good amount saved by the time we actually need to buy things!

Anyway, just adding "baby" to our budget is pretty exciting!

Re: We added a new budget category.

  • Can I use that for our 'dining room table' category?!? =) and the 'cruise spending $' category?

Do you just put it aside or get an acct for it?

    Adding Baby is exciting!!!

  • We also added a gifts/travel category after the amount we spent in December.

Make it an automatic transfer and you'll have saved up for furniture/travel in no time!

Right now it's just going into our general savings.  Maybe as we actually get close to the birth of a child we'll move it into it's own account because I'm hoping we'll just rename the "baby" category to "child expenses/college savings."

DH and I really need to do that...

yeah... we need to do the college savings thing before they get too much older... gah! 3 at once?!? And I know that 2/3 will def be going to college.

It was really helpful because I had no idea how to being to figure out what we needed to save.  We're only focusing on items we'll need to purchase rather than daycare, lost income on maternity leave, etc. because that gets rather overwhelming and we don't even know where we'll be living by the time a baby is born.

DH keeps saying our kids will do Navy ROTC like he did.  I always have to counter with "ONLY if they want to."  I must be overwhelming to think about sending kids to college.  My public liberal arts college tuition went up 3 times when I was a senior and that was in 2003.

Thanks for the link!   I'm sure it'll be informative (and probably depressing LOL!).

It was hard for me to estimate certain things like daycare.  I have no earthly idea how much daycare costs.  Everyone I know with kids in daycare uses family members part of the time or all the time.

  • I went to a small state college... I think it was like $5k/yr! Then again, that was in the late 80's-early 90's.

The SKIDS are looking at more 'private' or large ones-ok, Arizona State for starters... One 'might' be interested in the armed forces... I'm not sure.  I am very fortunate (right now) that they are very smart--chances of scholarships seem like options.

We have 8 years to save... I can't believe they're even thinking of where to go at this age-I didn't have a clue til a year or two before I went.

(still, the dining room furniture might come before that... =)

I really have no clue what to do for that.  My mom has already said that they want to help out with that so DH and I don't have to rely on daycare.  That would be great....BUT, who knows if that'll actually work out in practice.  Plus, in our area, huge daycare waitlists and costs loom.  All I know is that in-home and center costs vary, but in DC metro you can expect to pay around $30k a year for center care (yikkeeeesss).  I'd guess it might be a little less expensive where you are, but still $.

  • Eeeeeeeeeeeee Very very exciting!

DH and I kind of talked a tiny bit about making a baby saving fund on NYE! I have already started my own savings for maternity leave since my work doesnt offer paid time off...So all money I have been saving will just cover my normal monthly bills...

So yeah, we need to get on the ball with the savngs thing.

  • Woohoo - that's so exciting!!! It's a really great plan too.
