Where should I house hunt?
MH works in Kendall Square (Cambridge). We do not want his commute to be long, say no longer than 45 min. w/ traffic. What towns would you recommend?
Some things that are important to us: great school system, nice town center
TIA for any recommendations.
Re: Where should I house hunt?
For that location, I'd look at Watertown or Belmont. I don't know about Watertown schools but Belmont is supposed to be good.
If you don't mind private schools, the choices get better, IMO- Charlestown, Beacon Hill, and parts of Cambridge are desirable to me (although you may feel differently!
)
My company is in cambridge and the people who live in Watertown/Belmont seem to complain the least about their commutes.
I agree, the towns along Rt.2 are pretty nice and good school systems.
Those three towns above though all fall beyond the 45 minutes commute. I live up there and also commute to Kendall. The commute can be anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours each way depending on traffic and any delays on the T.
My first thought was also Belmont. Depending on your budget you can also look at Newton or Lexington, good school systems but it is pricey (as Concord and Carlisle are too).
Oh I meant, as far out as those towns.... I loved living in Belmont (when we rented). It really depends on your budget. Anything within a 45 minute commute w/good school systems are a lot more expensive (I am horrible with estimating but at least $300K+)...
Arlington and Belmont may be good options for you. I think Lexington and Newton may be out of reach unless you don't mind putting some work into a place.
Yes, Lexington is def out of reach as far as I can tell. We really don't want to have to put LOTS of work into a place.
I've lived in Waltham before (rented) and am in no hurry to return now I that I have a child. School system doesn't have the best of reputations!
We were in the same boat as you a few years ago. At least the prices are down now. It's really hard to find a house in that price range within the 128 belt. FWIW, I do have a num ber of friends with kids in the Waltham elementary schools and they like the schools. Waltham is much more affordable than Belmont, Arlington and Newton. Medford would not be a bad commute either. Again, I am not sure what the schools are like there though.
I live in Waltham and LOVE it. Although I haven't checked out the school systems yet, I hear they're average as well. My boss lives in Melrose and swears it's the best place in MA to raise your kids!
