BR: Birthing methods

What literature, etc did you read to help you decide which birthing method you chose?

Re: BR: Birthing methods

  • Nada.  I talked to my mom about it.  She deals with pregnant people all day long so I knew she'd be honest with me about what's feasible.

I also have no birth plan.  I intend to tell my doctor that my "plan" is to have a baby.

Mother of the Year.  Right here, folks.

  • I'm looking at a local Bradley Method instructor but the classes are 12 freaking weeks...holy long time...and they're Tuesday nights and of course DH works nights. So, mom will be in the room as well. Am I supposed to ask her to attend instead. Ugh. Confused.

Are you going natural? I am considering using this method too, I plan on reading and using my friend who used to be an instructor. I believe Ali is planning on using this too. I am calling my friend tonight I will talk to her and them let you know.

I bow down to ya'll who go natural.  I made it crystal clear to my doc that I was very much pro-epi.  I went natural until about 10 minutes before she was born and it was not fun.  Those that can do it are stronger than I :)

Ha I even wanted to have a tshirt made that said Give me an epi!! to wear when I went to the hospital!

  • As long as my previa doesn't continue then we will use a birth center where meds aren't even option. There is no doctor there to adminsiter anything. I'm allergic to pain meds anyway, so I think I have a pretty high tolerance, plus to be honest pain is the LEAST of my concerns right now.

  • Yeh I'd like to try that method (I'm pretty sure) and have the tub as an alternative. They have suites with tubs at the hospital I'm delivering so I guess I have that option as well. Nothing calms me down like a hot bath! lol

  • I am on my fourth class of the Bradley Method. I am really enjoying the classes. They're small, intimate groups, and you become very comfortable with the other people in the class. It kind of becomes like a little family.

If you're planning on having your mom at your birth she could be considered your "coach" if your H can't attend the classes. I think they prefer the husband to be there, but if it doesn't work, they will teach anyone how to be a coach.

Some of the videos and things are VERY outdated, but the information is still relevant.

The class focuses a lot on exercises to prepare you for birth, they equate it to running a marathon. You can't run a marathon without adequate training. They also focus a lot on nutrition, and remaining low-risk during your pregnancy.

There are relaxation techniques describe at every class, this include a sort-of mediation, massage, and other things. You're supposed to try out all of the relaxation technique so that you know what will work for you, and other options should one thing usually work, but during labor you don't want that type of massage, mediation, etc.

The 5, 6, and 7th classes focus on the coaching aspect of giving birth. It is mainly for the coaches to become comfortable with your wants, needs, and concerns. It also helps them prepare for the things to expect emotionally and physically while coaching during a natural birth.

We are also hiring a doula (she is our Bradley Instructor). She will be at the birth with me, and will help with the breathing, relaxation, and will be a support for my H as well.

I have just started writing a birth plan, but it will not be complete fora  couple of weeks. I will probably revise it after going through the Bradley class of writing birth plans.

If you have any questions about the Bradley Method, I can try to answer them. Like I said though, we only finished class four last night.

You can use all Bradley Techniques with a water birth.

  • I just heard back from the instructor and she said that it's not uncommon for them to have solo women there, but would also recommend mom coming since she'll be present. They'll also stuff that DH and I can practice at home and take-home materials for him so I guess I feel less silly!

Ali, I'm guessing you went thru the www.bradleybirth.com site because it's $300 as well for 12 wks. It starts tomorrow so it's catching me a bit off-guard as I haven't done too much research. But I just have to pay the deposit now if I find it's not right for me. I think it will be though. I'm excited. And nervous!

  • I went through the website to find the instructor. It was $300 for me as well, but we were able to do the first class, and then decide if we wanted to continue, if we did we would pay (which we did). My instructor doesn't make people pay everything up front either (unless they want to). I have really enjoyed it so far, and I was quite nervous the first class. I like it though!

I have on my calendar to attend hospital-given Baby Care and Breastfeeding classes, but it says that they cover that in the BM classes. From your first couple of classes, do you think they will cover those enough to avoid taking other classes? Looking into LLL meetings as well for additional BF support.

  • I think that the Bradley classes would cover those enough, and we will be doing the LLL meetings as well. Through the Bradley class we got the LLL book, "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding," and so far it's very informative and good. I am only planning on doing the Bradley classes, and not going to any hospital-sponsored classes.

  • I chatted with my friend on my drive home, and she said that the classes are worth the time investement, which for me is more than the money.
