I have an appointment this morning to check my thyroid levels. I'm really curious to see how well my current dose of Synthroid is working. I'm betting he ups the dosage. If so, I'm hoping I can talk him into letting me come back in 6 weeks to get re-checked. I had to wait 3 months this time after starting the meds.
Re: Dr. appt. this morning.
That's good to know. 99% of what I've read online consists of people saying they go back anywhere between 4-8 weeks to get their levels checked, and that's also what my Physician Assistant friend told me. Granted, I'm know what I'm reading online is not exactly medically sound advice.
I also realize every case is different. With me I started off having to go every three months, then I got extended to every six months then once he felt I was doing good, I now only have to go once a year. Also my PCP (who is a complete 'tard btw) will check my thyroid levels whenever I go in to see him, he says he doesn't like the fact that I only see my endo once a year, he said I should be seeing him at least 2 times a year and he will try and adjust my meds and what not, I never listen to him and I only actually get my blood work done IF he's also checking my blood for stuff HE should be checking for, if he sends me for just my thyroid, I never go. Last time he checked them my numbers were still coming down (my endo showed me what they were, as he always does, since my PCP didn't tell me when asked) and they weren't off by much at all, if even barely and he said "Oh, I do not like your numbers I'm going to decrease your meds", he wrote me out a new 'script and everything, I never filled it, when I saw my Endo in December I told him everything and he told me to keep ignoring my PCP, I was doing fine, my numbers were "normal" by then as well, the dose I am currently on is what my body needs apparently (I am on a really high dose of Levoxyl).
Speaking of which, I really need to start looking for a new PCP.
Haha, I think it's funny that your Endo told you to ignore your PCP. It's so difficult to find good doctors.
I'm going to ask for a printout of my blood work today because my doc is testing for more than just TSH this time. I also need to talk to him about stopping BCP since estrogen interferes with a blood protein that has something to do with the thyroid. I'm not planning on getting a new prescription when mine runs out next week.
I should have gone to med school and all this would be easier to understand!
How do you know if/when you need to get your thyroid checked? Is this something every woman should do? I think I've had mine checked once... a long time ago-prob 10 yrs. I only go to the docs if I'm sick (or have poison ivy) and then I take whomever is available, so I don't have a certain person I go to....
Good luck to you! Hope they find what is needed!
Usually only in 2 cases 1) If thyroid issues run in your family 2) If you are having symptoms of thyroid issues.
