I'm giving my notice tomorrow

I feel sort of like I'm jumping off a bridge.

I started my nanny job in August.  It's guaranteed 40 hours a week at a good pay rate.  I'm leaving it (I have to give 8 weeks notice) to take an interim teaching position on Durham Public Schools.  So after the teacher gets back from maternity leave i'll just be on the sub list.  It's a big pay cut then not guaranteed employment....but I feel like it's best for me to get my foot in the door.

The family I work for has NO idea.  I feel so bad and I'm dreading tomorrow.  I can't decide whether to do it when I get there, at nap time (although mom sometimes isn't home then), or at the end of the day.

Re: I'm giving my notice tomorrow

  • I'd go with the end of the day, that way you won't have to be there while they process the news. Sounds like good timing - given that you'll be subbing towards the end of the school year, hopefully it will set you up to fill a position for the following school year. Good luck tomorrow!
  • Thanks Terp.

  • I agree w/ Terp... end of day would probably be best.

Good luck, I hope they receive the news kindly. I think they should be proud of you and supportive of your desire to better yourself! :)

  • I agree that it would seem the end of the day would be best, but if the conversation feels comfortable earlier, go ahead and do it...you'll feel more relieved once it's out in the open.

    Good Luck!

  • Good luck!  I subbed for a while when we lived in Louisiana.  I found that if you get in good with a school, you'll have about as much work as you want.  I subbed once for a particular kindergarten teacher and the kids loved me.  So, she started asking for me whenever she needed a sub, and told the other kindergarten teachers about me, so they'd ask for me.  Since you'll be subbing long term, you'll certainly get to know other teachers, so I'd just make sure you let them know that you're going to be looking to continue to sub after the teacher gets back from maternity leave.
  • Changes in a job or career track are always scary,  but good for you for going after what you really want to do!

I also vote for telling the family at the end of the day for all the reasons posted above. GL!

  • Good luck to you!  It's never easy news to deliver, but it's for the best for you!
  • Thanks ladies.  I actually told her at nap time because the opportunity presented itself (she isn't working this week).  She was very nice and of course said they thought it was best for me, but begged me to stay.  They really only need a nanny until May so I would probably be out of a job until then.  If anyone knows a nanny looking for work I know a family that may give them a job until May or June.
