Maui Tourist Questions - Please Help :)

Aloha!

Looking for help from the locals to help me plan our vacation to Hawaii in October.  My cousin is getting married at the Ma'alaea Estate and we'll be there for a week.

  1. On what part of the island and/or any specific properties would you recommend staying?  We stayed at the Outrigger Royal Kahana when we went in 2006 but are considering a rental through vrbo.com based on recos on the Travel board.
  2. Any recommendations for what to do?  We visited Lahaina, went whale watching and snorkeling, beach bummed, luau at Royal Lahaina, and went to Halakaela last time.  Want to do Road to Hana but heard it's best to hire a driver rather than drive it yourself - any recos for a company?
  3. Any recommendations for where to eat? I'm open to anything!

Mahalo ladies!

  • As far as what to do, my favorite activities last time were both horseback riding and ziplining at Piiholo Ranch.

  • As far as the road to Hana, if any of you get car sick easily make them the driver! It's a long way to the seven sacred pools but totally worth it to go all the way there. Don't turn back before you are there like many people do. Have fun ;-)
  • I agree with pp that the Road to Hana is drivable on your own (I did it twice) but if anyone gets carsick easily, they might wanna be the driver.

I also like Kihei because it's less crowded than Lahaina and has nice beaches and is pretty good for surfing too. And Makena is nearby and has lots of turtles in the morning. GL planning your trip, congrats to your cousin, and have fun!

  • You should get a copy of the guide book Maui Revealed.

Where to stay - I really don't think you can go wrong with the South or West side and staying at a condo is super convenient and can save you money if you eat in sometimes.  I always stayed on the S. Side (Kihei/Wailea) until recently - only because that is where we always stayed when we went there while I was a kid

Both times I have went with DH we have stayed on the W. Side - Kaanapali.  I must admit, the resorts along the Kaanapali beach walk are convenient - we used the car a lot less and spent more time lounging by the very nice pool (Hyatt).

Hana - I have always done the road to Hana on my own.  I don't get car sick and I really enjoy being able to stop when we want and go at our own pace.  I have never researched tour companies for this drive.  The best way to do it is with a convertible!  Before we actually set out on the drive DH tried to drag his feet about the "long boring drive that we got up way to early for" when we were there for the wedding, but it ended up being a highlight for him! If you get the Maui revealed book they have quite a few suggestions for places to stop and explore.

Other ideas - If you want a different sailing/snorkling adventure I highly recommend the Trilogy Boat Co.'s Lanai trip.  It's an all day excursion leaving from Lahaina.  They include breakfast, lunch and a bbq dinner and you can snorkle and explore the island.

Depending on when you went last time compared to this next trip maybe you will be there during whale season and might want to look into a whale watching specific tour.

Places to eat - I love to go to Roy's.  I also like Maui Tacos (cheap) the Aloha mixed plate (also cheap), and Kimo's.
