Work Advice

I need it.

I work for a super small company where everyone (except me) is related.  My co-worker, who I am suspicious of, is telling me that our bosses (aka his cousin & his roommate) are planning on moving the company to Houston in the fall.  This is purely office gossip and there have been no signs that I have seen that show us moving.  However, I am obviously concerned.  I carry the insurance for us and I am the breadwinner.  To say that me losing my job would be catastrophic is an understatement.

I had every intention of job searching while on maternity leave but I also had every intention of being picky and not settling.

So my question is...do I approach my boss about this?  Even though it's gossip from a third party, I feel like it's something I need to know if it's true or not.

Re: Work Advice

  • NEVER feed office gossip, that's a monster that will die without food. I do think you need to protect yourself and look for work. Once you get an interview I don't think it would be inappropriate to speak to your boss.

So should I job hunt now and give a start date of July 1?  I can't fathom waddling into an interview 8 months pregnant.  Or should I just wait until I've had the babe and can search from the comfort of my own home.  Who's going to watch my kid while I go on an interview?!?!

With everything else going on, I so do not need this right now.  Both of my bosses can DIAF.

  • If you give a start date of July 1st and go waddeling into an interview now, everyone will understand. Even though BR isn't as bad as other places, the economy sucks. I would do as much as you can. As for watching the kid, doesn't YH have days off occasionally in the middle of the week? Just say you aren't available on a particular day, or call your friends and see if someone can help out.

  • From what you've told me about coworker and how full of sh*t he is, I say you go to bossman with a "can you believe what he just said?? Elle oh elle!" attitude and see what he says.

But, from what you told me about bossman, he surely can DIAF and maybe this is some sneaky trick he's trying to pull and wanted to keep the move a secret from everyone.

In the end, I agree with MT. Start the job search with a start date of July 1. Keep it very quiet and don't add to the gossip.

  • Good idea, Jen. Approach him laughing about it, then watch his expression change. You'll definitely know then. I also agree wi MT. Start now and definitely don't play the gossip game! Sorry you are stressing over this. It's the last thing you need right now I'm sure.

This sounds like a good plan.  I guess if I get a bite on something that looks promising I'll go to them and inquire about my future here.

    Thanks, ladies!
