Is there a general order I should go with...

when changing my last name to my spouse's? (I am assuming his name, but getting my documents changed)

I have put this off for long enough, and now that I have some time I can get it changed.  Just wondering if the order in which you change certain documents matters.  For example, do I need to change my driver's licence and SIN before the bank and payroll.  Should I change the bank before I inform payroll about the change - I guess what I mean is will it affect my pay, because I have direct deposit?

Is there anything I am missing that should be changed?

  • I would love the answer to this, too!

Do I have to have my SIN changed?

  • I don't think you have to, but I heard it could be a problem in future if you apply for EI or pension.  Not sure though.

  • I have yet to change my SIN card. It has not affected a job change, EI, RRSP's or pension. My mom's is even in her maiden name still and she has had no problems.

I did my license first as it is needed to change everything else. You will need your marriage license and birth certificate to do that. I then did my passport and then all my banking.  I didn't need to change anything with my work payroll. I did notify them of my name change and no documents were required for that.

My health card is still the red and white one so it is still in my maiden name.

The house is in my maiden name (I hadn't changed it yet when we moved here).

Don't forget to change your name for taxes (using your epass online) and on your car registration.

  • I've changed my bank and credit cards so far. I needed to do that before ordering new chequebooks with my new name, before giving my employer a new void cheque.

My mortgage is still in my maiden name and will continue to be, until we buy a new house and get a new mortgage.

I haven't done driver's license or anything else yet. I don't plan to change my passport until the next time it needs to be renewed.

  • I did my driver's license first, then health card. I was moving from Quebec back to Ontario, so I got my car registration all done at the same time in married name. I then updated it with my bank. Shortly afterwards I had to get a new passport, so I had it done in my married name.

When I filed my taxes last year in Ontario, it was under my married name.

At work, I am still using my maiden name and my pay stub is still in my maiden name as well as my expense cheques that get sent to me are in my maiden name. I've had no issues with the bank in depositing them.

I have yet to change my SIN card. It has not affected anything. Any new RRSP forms, Insurance forms, etc...have all been filled out in my married name and using the same SIN card. Heck...my SIN card has my signature from when I was just a teenager.

ETA: My mortgage is still in my maiden name as well. None of my banking info changed aside from the name change. I still have the same accounts.

  • Good point about taxes and mortgage.  I want to get the necessary stuff changed before we buy a house, so what would I have to change for that?

Other than that there seems to be no order - just kind of do things as you need to right?

ring_pop - you are using your passport with your maiden name with no problems (even though your other identification has changed)?  I just got my passport in April, and I really don't want to have to get another (and spend $$) just because of the name change.

There is an order. For pretty much everything, you will need photo ID (drivers license)... so you should do that first after getting the marriage certificate. Other than that, there isn't really an order.

I have updated everything, including SIN card, but I forgot to update my government (EPass) and my taxes still were fine last year.

As for passport... You can have it in your maiden name, but if you book any trips make sure it's in your maiden name!!! If you book a trip in your married name you will need to have ID to match it, so for domestic it would be fine if your health card or drivers license is in your married name, but if you want to fly international your ticket has to match your passport. There are no options to change your name on a plane ticket so the ID has to match.

  • For taxes if you want it changed you have to do it through epass. If you do it on your tax form (i always use my married name on it even though i have yet to do it through epass) it won't be changed for next tax season. It doesn't cause any difficulties with filing either way though.
  • Awesome, thanks for the help!

  • It is suggested that you DONT change you SIN; as it isnt affected...
    My mother still has hers in her maiden name;
The only reason you would change your SIN is if you were legally changing you name and not Assuming a new last name due to marriage. If you change your SIN you need to change your birth certificate... now this is as of Sept .09.

I have yet to change anything as I still have a red and white health card and dont want to change that.

The bank does have on file my married name incase I recieve cheques and such in that name from family and friends!

This is interesting information. Is it on their website or anything like that? I was going to change mine soon but if this is the case then I won't be doing it.

  • Watch out for the passport one! DH booked us a trip in Sept and didn't even think to book it in my maiden name (I of course forgot all about it until *just* after he's booked it). The airline wasn't able to change the name on the tickets so I ended up having to rush a new passport in my married name.

I'm in the process & here is the order I've done it so far...not sure if it is logical but it is how I've done it:

    • Drivers License & Health Card
    • the bank- although I kept my maiden name & put my married name as an "alias" in case I continue to get cheques in my maiden name (since I'm keeping it at work)
    • Telus, Rogers, Bell, etc....
    • SIN
    • Today I'm working on changing my passport (I have a business trip in early March)
    • This week I'm going to let the mortgage & insurance companies know by mail

I do want to note that I've been using the website www.imamrs.com (pay $50) and it walks you through the process & is really helpful as it provides forms and pre-populated letters that you can just print and send in.

Hope this helps. Not sure about the order of doing things.....

I just changed my SIN & didn't have to change my birth certificate. The only time you have to change that is if you do a legal name change. If you are just assuming your husband's name you can change your SIN name simply by showing your marriage certificate & everything remains the same.

You can visit http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/sin/index.shtml for more info. & they have a great # that you can call & speak to a person about any questions or concerns.

Also, just after I got married, I was told by a colleague that when you change your name on your SIN, your # changes. This is not true.

  • Thanks Ashleigh!

All of the information and links that you provided are really helpful.

Also, good point about keeping your maiden name on file with the bank.  I will be sure to do that.

Yup, exactly. As long as you remember to do this, you'll be fine. It's a general rule I follow anyway - when booking travel, I always double check that everything matches my passport.

I'm in the process, you have to change your SIN for your payroll dept. And changing your licence does NOT automatically change your health card, etc.

eta: the changing your sin rule is realtively new. I was married last Aug and it was required, but a co-worker was married almost two years ago and it wasn't.
