Frustrating!

Last month I had a charge from Paypal for something that wasn't mine.  They refunded the amount that was taken out without my knowing, but because of the mistake, I received two overdraft fees on my checking account.  Now Paypal won't reimburse for the fees ($66) and say Chase should reverse the fees and Chase is saying they won't reverse the fees and Paypal should reimburse me for them.  I know $66 shouldn't be that big of a deal, but it's not my fault my Paypal account was used incorrectly (I don't know if it was Paypal's fault or fraud or some sort)!

  • Ugh...sorry you're having to deal with this mess Millie. I had a similar "overdraft" situation happen with a wedding gift check. It was horrible and akward...and I just paid the fees b/c I felt so bad to ask for almost $50 more than what she'd given me.

     I would keep at it eventhought it's a mess! I know you're not sure whose fault it is, but it isn't yours! I hope you get it all figured out soon!

  • I know how you feel!  Both my debit card number and Dh's debit card number were stolen last month (mine the week before xmas, his christmas eve) so not only did we have to close our accounts and I was without a debit card for a week until DH got his stolen then we just opened a new account....but we couldn't spend any money until the charges cleared which took 4 days!!!!  THEN it was overcharged and then fees $90) on top of it....it took a good week or so to get everything cleared up.  Such a pain in the BIGGEST A$$ ever!
  • Can you conference call your bank and Paypal and moderate the wrestling match that ensues?  I think that your bank is right for what it is worth.  Paypal sets the overdraft charge and that money goes to them so Paypal would be the one that owes the $$ back for the erroneous fee.  Being the middle person stinks and if you can get them talking to eachother, then you're out of it which is a good thing!
  • Ugh. Sorry you're going through this. I think witty has a good idea with the conference call. Did you try talking to another person at PayPal? Sometimes depending on who you get on the phone in these situations, you can get different results.
  • A conference call is a possibility.  I tried e-mailing Paypal back yesterday with the paper the bank gave me that says they'll only refund if it's a bank error so I'll wait to see where that goes.  Stick out tongue

    Actually, Paypal does not set the overdraft amount, Chase does. As a former banker, I can tell you that in the bank's perspective, if Paypal reversed the charges, then they have admitted the error was their responsibility (whether it was a processing error or fraud). So, they should be refunding your bank overdraft fees. The business will always resist because, let's face it, nobody wants to give money away, but if you speak to a manager of some kind and offer to fax them your bank statement or snapshot of the day and fees in question, and that clearly shows the chain of events resulting from that specific charge, they should in good conscience refund you. If you've done that and made a fuss (which a lot of times you have to do to get anything accomplished!) and they still refuse, you can then go back to Chase and say, "look, I've done all I can and I'm a good customer and have done nothing wrong. What can you do for me?"

    Be strong, They bet on the consumer not fighting hard enough and keeping your money, so don't let them win!
