What's your favorite item @

Trader Joes (if you have one where you live)?

Everyone always raves about this store, and I have one 5 miles from where I live, yet I never go.

So, if I go, what should I get?

Re: What's your favorite item @

  • Mandarian Chicken

  • I don't have one near me but stock up when I visit my sister. I could list like 100 things but I'll start with a few things I love:

    -Beet and Carrot Tortilla Chips

    -Any and all salsa

    -Frozen garlic naan

-Veggie broth (I know, odd favorite but it's SO much better than other stuff)

-potstickers (I buy BAGS of these when I go)

  • Trader joes pot stickers kick so much ass.

They have this marinated chicken that I love. I couldn't tell you what the marinade is though.

The orange chicken is also awesome.

  • We dont have one here but I've had their salsa and absolutely love it.  Its about the only storebrand I would choose to eat over my homemade salsa.
  • They have fresh naan as well (garlic and plain), which is incredible with their Mediterannean Cheese Style Yogurt.

I also love "Cat Cookies" -- they're for people. They are graham cracker cookies shaped like cats. They have vanilla, chocolate, and cinammon, I believe.

Also, you have to pick up a bottle (or 6) of Charles Shaw Shiraz (famously known as "Two-Buck Chuck"). It's less than $2 a bottle but is actually quite good wine. I like the Shiraz the best -- I would say it competes with many of the $6-$10 typical brands. I bought a bottle for each of my fellow teachers in my grad school cohort for Christmas/Surviving Finals.

I'm from PA.  They don't sell booze in our supermarkets (with the exception of Wegman's, but they are few and far between).

Thanks, I'm kinda excited to go....lame, I know.

  • They were talking about this the other day on D&R. I knew that it was quite a distance to the nearest one. So, I looked it up. 128 miles to Columbus, OH. Lame.

  • I think the best thing about them is the regular stuff you can get there for ridiculous prices.  Waaay better than the normal grocery store.  They used to have a sign up with all the comparisons--like 99 cents for pasta and eggs--with the regular store and you save tons of money on your visit.

But for special TJ's only foods, I love their chickenless chicken nuggets (soy).  We always have their shrimp gyoza in the house (also veggie gyoza).  Frozen spinach artichoke dip--keep it in the house for when guests come by.  Even their tortilla chips I think are great.  Avocado's Number guacamole.  Eggplant hummus--low in fat, high in fiber.  I like the cinnamon Schoolbook cookies (I think that's what they're called--they're in number and letter shapes).  And meringue cookies.  And around Christmas they have peppermint Joe's O's (like oreos).  They have fantastic frozen desserts--beautiful cakes and things.  Seafood and crab cakes!

I will stop because now I'm raving like a crazy person.  I seriously only shop at Ralph's for soda and paper towels now.
