? about how long local, organic beef is good for

I wasn't sure if I should post this here or the WC board, but I decided that you guys might deal with local meats more.

I have ground sirloin that was frozen, then thawed in the fridge.  The meat came from a local farm, and was frozen the day it was processed.

How long do you think this would be good for in the fridge?  I wasn't sure if it would last longer because its fresher meat than what is sold in stores.

I tried to smell it, but I don't usually smell meat in general, so I don't have anything to go on.

Thank you.

  • DH had ground beef thawing in the fridge for 4 or 5 days and he ate it without getting sick.  It was the same as yours - frozen on the same day it was processed.

  • I wouldn't wait more than a couple days...but that's just more of a guess and more what I would do.

  • I usually dont eat anything thats been more than 3 days.  But you'd know if it smelled rancid.  Because it wouldnt smell like anything you'd want to eat.  when in doubt I throw it back in the freezer, until I know I can cook it.  this only works once though.

is local, organic beef somehow different from reg. beef in this regard? i've always been taught to never refreeze beef because that's incredibly dangerous as far the growth of harmful bacteria.

This. I would never refreeze the beef.

I buy local meat and I wouldn't eat it after 3 days or so, but that's just me.

  • I also think 3 days, 4-5 max.  I would definetely not re-freeze it.
