call a plumber? heating dude? both?

I'm so freaking annoyed right now!!  Last weekend I woke up and our house was 46 degrees and only the upstairs heat would turn on.  We have hot water baseboard heating.  MH was not home so I called my uncle because he is rather handy and he thought my issue was some of the pipes for the baseboard heating froze when the heat turned off (for unknown and mysterious reasons).

Ok, so while he went to grab a portable heater for me I attacked a cold spot on a pipe with my hairdryer and the heat came on almost immediately.  Cue me feeling pretty badass for fixing the problem.

Ok...  so then it happens again.  Only upstairs heat turns on, cold spots on pipe, hairdry pipe.  Problem fixed.  I want to call a professional to find out what's going on, MH thinks he's Mr. Fix-it and tries to insulate the pipe that keeps freezing and screws around doing what else I'm not sure.  This works for about 2 days.

Now he just left for Florida for 5 days and NONE of the heat will turn on.  I don't even know who to call....  a plumber?  a heating company?  Both?

Ugh.

Re: call a plumber? heating dude? both?

  • Also, any recommendations would be much appreciated.
  • I don't know for sure, but on This Old House they usually have the plumber deal with radiant heating.  It couldn't hurt to call and ask if they fix those problems or if you should call an HVAC professional.  Good luck, it sucks to be without heat when it's this cold out!!

  • I'd call a plumber, but our plumber also works on our furnace anyway. Good luck!

  • I would call a HVAC dude too.  DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT CALL/HIRE ROWLAND J. DOWNS.  They are the worst.
  • I have heat!!  I totally recommend Boyce and Drake out of Saratoga.  The guys was soo nice and so informative.  He explained everything to me (multiple times... I take awhile to catch on with heating issues apparently haha).  We ended up having tons of air in our pipes.

    Thanks, girls!
