(Not so) hypothetical question

If a customer you work with occasionally called your boss to give them a glowing review about you, would you expect said boss to tell you about said glowing review? Not for a raise or anything, just to make you feel good inside and let you know that you're not a moron and you're doing things right that customers appreciate?
I'm friends with everybody in this office. We're all best friends - I love everybody here. But sometimes your best friends start coming into work late, and start having dentist appointments that aren't dentist appointments. And that's when it is nice to let them know that you can beat them up.

Re: (Not so) hypothetical question

  • Um, yes, I would expect said boss to mention the glowing review except in cases where said boss is insecure and jealous of said employee to begin with (I'm pretending this was a full-on hypothetical as I have no idea how your relationship is with said boss).
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Yes.  Maybe not a word for word recap but at least "Hey I got a call from Joe and they were really impressed with how you handled situation XYZ the other day." would be expected.

  • I would... that is one thing my boss is good at is telling me that others are happy with my work.
  • Not necessarily. Though it's nice when they do tell you that they appreciate the work that you're doing, I don't think I'd expect the compliment. It could be that the compliment just reaffirmed to your boss that you're doing well, as is likely expected. In a small company, I might say otherwise. You work in a large (ish) company though, don't you?

I have to say though, I wouldn't do well in a company that didn't show me that they were appreciative of the work I was doing. Even if doing a good job is expected, please tell me that I'm "meeting expectations".

  • When I worked in corporate land, we got special recognitions at our monthly meetings whenever a subscriber bragged about us to a super. So yes, I would want and expect to know.

  • So far I've always worked in big companies and I guess along the lines of what Chrissy said, doing good work is expected. I would just assume that unless I had an actual complaint against me, that I was doing good work.

That said, I don't do well with positive reinforcement. I kind of just like to be left alone and if I am doing something wrong let me know. Otherwise, don't critique my work. In my mind, if you hired me, and you don't fire me, I am just fine.

    Ditto.

  • I work at a company of about 150 people.  There are 8 people in my department, 1 above me, 3 at the same level with me, and 3 below us. Big boss has been known to come in and tell several people that customers called and told them how great they were doing, so this isn't an odd practice. It doesn't happen often, but it does.

When I talked to customer today, she told me that she'd talked to my big boss briefly on Monday and said that she really appreciated my work ethic (I put in a lot of extra hours for her during my vacation last week), etc., etc. I felt kinda awkward on the phone hearing it, thanked her, and moved on to another subject.

Big boss has come in to our office several times this week, and I spoke with her for a solid 20 minutes yesterday in the break room.

I normally wouldn't care, but I'm being a big whiny baby today and needed some reassurance that I'm doing OK. Sigh.

  • I would expect to hear something. Like others said, maybe not a play by play recap of the conversation, but just a general overview that so and so said you handled whatever well.
