eReader opinions/reviews

Sooooo I've been obsessed with reading reviews on the three top dogs: Kindle2, Sony PRS-600 and Nook. Each have pros and cons.

Nook is so new that there are many quirks to work out and not enough reviews yet from everyone who got them as Xmas gifts. Pros are touch screen (even with color), wifi, lending of books, B&N library, free B&N wifi access and previews of books, expandable memory. Cons are that it has a slow processor, making switching screens and turning pages rather long and many have crashed and no text to speech.

Sony is also touch screen (b/w), pretty good library (not as good as B&N or Amazon), expandable memory, and you can write on it like a tablet. Pros are no wifi or text to speech.

Kindle2 does have wifi, Amazon library and text to speech (meaning I can listen to my book while I commute yay!). Cons are it does not have a touch screen (which I'm addicted to cause of the iPhone and would love to have tablet capabilities) and no expandable memory.

So has anyone played with two or all three of them? If you have any, what are your thoughts. I know Apple is coming out with the iSlate late this month but I've read it's going to be around $800 and I believe it's even bigger than the Kindle DX, so no thanks.

Re: eReader opinions/reviews

  • Read in earlier post that you graduated. Congrats! And yay for coming back to the board =)

I got MH the Kindle2 for his birthday. Like you said, Nook is just too new and I don't really buy products that don't have enough reviews (after learning the hard way when I got my cousin a $250 MP3 player back in the day that just broke a few months later and she ended up spending about the same on the first iPod that came out instead). I considered the Sony eReader but the problem I have with Sony products is that they're so overly proprietary about their standards and using only THEIR Sony MemoryStick that I don't think they'll get too far with their products and I don't want to end up with a potentially deprecated product with lack of support. So I went with the Kindle.

I also have had only positive experiences with Amazon's customer service and we shop there a lot, so it made more sense anyway. They also include a PDF reader so you can read other documents on your Kindle. The wifi is nice, although you can't browse the web with it but good for buying books and subscribing to blogs, papers, etc. MH loves his Kindle. We both have Droids so we know what you mean about not having the touchscreen, because we tried to scroll through the pages subconsciously several times before, only to be reminded that it's not touchscreen, but you get used to it. It hasn't been a real problem or issue for us. Anyway, GL with ur decision and let us know which one you get!

Edit: Sorry, SanHawaii is right about browsing the web. You can browse the web with it, but it's not really meant/made for that. You're better off using your phone for that...

  • MH and i both have kindles, we love them!  I too, love the pdf capability.

i've read some *really* scathing reviews of the nook (here's one, sorry having issues with linky - http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/technology/personaltech/10pogue.html), so i wouldn't get one yet.  general consensus is that they rushed to get it out by xmas and it's not ready yet.  really slow, lots of misleading marketing (the nyt article is pretty good about giving specific examples)

the sony one, eh, never really considered it, but i generally don't use sony for the same reason as inamra - i don't like all the proprietary stuff.

the kindle is a little slow, but the nook is slower, so eh, you get used to it, and it doesn't bother me anymore.  i see the appeal of touchscreen, but don't really view it as necessary for an ereader.  plus, the nook touchscreen is only a small portion of the actual screen.

    disclaimer: i love amazon.  really.

eta: i don't really use the wifi on my kindle, and i hear a lot of webpages don't display properly on it.  doesn't matter to me though, b/c i just to download books.  i use my phone (nexus one!) to surf the web when away from my computer.
