What BC method after the pill?

I am considering going off of the pill after being on it for years.  For those of you who have done this, what BC method do you use now?  I really don't want to go back to using condoms :/

Re: What BC method after the pill?

  • IUD!

  • I'm on Depo right now but I would not recommend.  I'm switching back to BCP in April.
    Natural m/c @ 6 weeks - 3/1/2013 Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I use FAM, but it does involve some condom use during my fertile phase.  The other option is abstaining from sex during that time.
  • We're using FAM with condoms.  I was too chicken to go through with getting an IUD, although I probably will after we're done having children.

For us, condoms aren't that big of a deal.  Obviously, we prefer it without, but it beats the zero sex drive I had on the pill.

  • For a while we were just using condoms after I tried the IUD.  But after so many issues with BC's, my husband decided he needed to man up and he went in and got sniped.  Neither of us want kids right now and every time we talk about it,  its not something we see in our future.

  • I was on Depo for 10+ years and needed to do something different. i just got Mirena in Dec and so far i love it.  i don't have to do anything for 5years and it was a breeze to get in.  it hurtfor 40sec and then it was over. we don't want to have kids soit was a great choice for us
  • I also use the FAM. Condoms can be a pain, but for me the benefits of the FAM outweigh the condom usage.
  • check w/ your dr. for what is right for you.

  • DH and I use condoms.
  • sorry, what does FAM mean/stand for?

It's the Fertility Awareness Method.  Basically, you chart your cycles and use your waking temperature, cervical fluid and cervical position to determine when you're fertile and when you're not.  If you're trying to get pregnant, you use that information to time sex.  If you aren't trying to get pregnant, you use that information to either avoid sex or protect against getting pregnant.

It takes some dedication, but I haven't found it any more inconvenient than taking the pill.  If you're interested, read Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  It's a really good introduction and how-to.

ETA:  I wanted to throw the personal opinion in there, too.  I really love it because I feel like myself again.  I was on the pill for just under 6 years and when I switched from the original pill (Ortho-Lo), I felt like a raging lunatic and whatever I tried didn't work with my body.  It's so great to feel in control of my emotions and body again and I really love how I'm not pumping myself full of hormones.

Obviously, this is just my opinion and it's not for everyone, but I thought some of the actual experience with it besides as it relates to sex would be helpful.

  • I'm on NuvaRing and I love it. Pop it in for 3 weeks, remove it for a week. Repeat.

The pill made me sick often, I have a pretty weak stomach, and I was told that I should wait until after kids to get an IUD. Don't know if that is true or not.... didn't do a whole lot of research so don't take my word on it.

  • I was also on the NuvaRing for about 8 months and loved it!  so easy, you just have to be comfortable inserting it.  I only stopped it b/c we are trying to conceive =)
  • We use gel/foam and he pulls out. It's not the most scientific but we are four years no accidents or even scares so I figure we are doing something right! I can't use any form of hormonal bc - it screws me up. There are lots of options depending on your preferences and how against having kids you are at the moment. This works for us and it's easy and hormone free!
  • I am currently using Depo. I love it!! Although I have been noticing a tiny bit of weight gain that they warn about but for no period and not having to worry about for three months I'll take it.
