FIL Christmas gift update

So as you may or may not remember, I have had some resentment about FIL borrowing money and never bringing anything to the table (so to speak - either being an active part of our lives or paying back any of his debts).

I was shocked when he came by after Christmas to pay back his debts.  Of course I even asked DH "do you think he can afford this?".

DH called his dad the day he deposited the check, to double-check that it was ok.. his dad gave him the green light..

Yes, it bounced.  So I have been told not to deposit my check.

My guess is this is no different than all the times FIL has had to borrow money from us.  He gets paid for something, deposits it in the bank, and the bank takes the money because he is in debt.  I don't understand how this can happen repeatedly (I mean, I know people do.. it's just sad..)

I'm actually not that surprised (and I'm not mad).  Just an update.

Re: FIL Christmas gift update

  • Aww, what a bummer situation.
  • That sucks.  I'm sure he thought he had the money in the account and the bank just took it like you said.  Sounds like he had good intentions.

I too feel like Dar and Marcy and hope he just made an innocent mistake and really thought he had the funds available.

  • If you ever get a check from him again, I'd go to his bank and cash it out, that way it's not causing you fees.  I'm sorry that this is still going on.
