Anyone own a Great Dane?

Hi Ladies! Long time no chat.

I was just wondering if anyone on here owns a Great Dane or knows anyone with one? DH and I are looking into breeders right now. We have found one we really like and think we will be going with. This particular breeder is out of Springwater and is against cropping, which we love. But I just wondered if anyone here had one and where they got theirs.

I know there are a lot of people who would say check out a rescue. However, we really want a Dane. They have incredible personalities. Considering we do have young children, though, (and also considering the size they get), we can't afford to bring a dog with an unknown/questionable background into our home. We  need to have him/her trained not to pounce before it reaches 5 feet tall. LOL

Re: Anyone own a Great Dane?

  • Actually, rescues usually live with foster families who work with them and learn about their personalities... so while you may not know much about where the dog came from, you'll know how it behaves in a variety of situations, and it may already have some training.

I think having kids is a lame excuse to buy from a breeder, but you'll do what you want anyway.

  • We had one when I was around 10. We had to re home him, I don't know all the details as I was young but I do recall he went after and knocked down a little girl. He was a huge dog, I like big dogs but they are just too big for my tastes!
  • Hi there,

I haven't owned one, so can't help with breeder or rescue information. But I agree with pp if you are interested in a rescue at all- foster families do an excellent job of evaluating dogs and whether or not they'd be ok with kids. It could be a lot easier to get one that is past the puppy madness- especially with a bigger dog.

The only thing I've heard from talking to folks that have had them is that because of their size, their lifespan is on the shorter end of large dogs, but I have no clue if that is always the case or not.

  • I have a Great Dane that we got from a breeder in the Albany/Troy area. She'll be 2 years old Feb 3rd. She has a really great personality and is such a sweetheart. I would definitely recommend the breeder we got her from. My husband wants to get another one (we also have a small dog) but there's only so much room in our current house. lol We choose not to crop her ears even though the breeder recommended doing it. I'm really glad that we made this decision.

Let me know if you want me to send you the breeders information.

  • Agree with pp. Most breed specific rescues are foster-based and will really be able to tell you about a dogs background - at that, you really don't ever know how dogs at breeders were really brought up and handled.

Anyways, if you want, feel free to PM me the breeders name. I've very involved in animal rescue - specifically puppy mill rescue - and have plenty of resources to check out the breeder. If not, just look for a few things: reputable breeders only breed a dog once every 2 years - some will do once a year but most stick to every other year. All the dogs are champions - they show the dogs, and the dogs win. They do health and genetic testing on all dogs - to include hips, knees, etc. Also, with Dane's the breeders should NOT be feeding puppy food. Puppy food is one of the worse things you can do for great dane puppies. HTH!

  • Thanks ladies! We ended up deciding to go with a breeder from around Dansville. We sent in our puppy survey. So, step one is done.

We are researching brands of food. We are between Nutro, EVO, and eagle Pack. Any recommendations there?
