I'm considered mature enough to vote, pay taxes, and go to war

but not to drive a rental car without paying fees out my @ss. That makes sense. The fees for being under 25 are more than the car costs per day....

I already knew this before we planned out trip, but reserving the car just brought back out the frustration. It's just ridiculous! Sorry, I needed to vent.

I KNEW you were going to say this when I saw the title of your post. It's nuts. I get it in theory, but I was actually a better driver at 22 than I am now. Why? Because I drove every day then and now I drive maybe once every two or three months. Yet, I can now rent a car without the fees. Silly!

  • The age to no longer be considered an "inexperienced driver" in Mass is 21 (your auto insurance rates go down at that age, and you can rent a car without extra fees).  I did not know it was different ages depending on the state.

  • I mean I can see since the accident rate for people under 25 is higher that there is an age restriction. But if there's going to be restrictions, it should be if you are under 25, your driving record will determine your ability to rent. Not, well lots of people are stupid so sucks to be you!!!

The worst part is we had to go the dates we are for the training and DH turns 25 just 2 weeks later.... He tried calling a few companies to ask for the fee to be waived since he's so close and what is 2 weeks going to change, but they had none of it.

  • Certain companies have different policies as well.  I do the rentals for our office and Hertz will allow 21 but Enterprise is 25.   Because I deal with them so closely, I know that it is because of THEIR insurance that these rules are set in place.  If they were to lower the age, their rental rates would increase because of what is considered by their insurance to be more of a liablity.  Yes it sucks but what are you gonna do.......
  • I can't stand that about rental cars! This was the problem we ran into when M was stuck in Newark. He and his bro were going to rent a car and drive down to Orlando, but with all the fees and everything (AND M turns 25 in March! So dumb) they decided not to do it. I wish they would lower the age. I think 25 is too old.

This would then turn into descrimination. Allowing certain people of the same age to do something and not others would end up being disasterous.  You would have to then have an entire team of people to just reivewe driving records and it would be subjective.  That wouldnt work.  Just remember that everyone is under 25 once in their life.
  • Yeah like Karrey said...Check around...I haven been renting cars since I was 21. Some places charge less or dont have a daily fee...but their actually rental rate may be higher...I would do some more searching and comparing :)

As for getting the companies rental Ins, I have only gotten it once...when I went to OH and was driving in the snow for the first time. Otherwise, most Credit card companies cover rental car ins...so you dont have to get it.

  • I ran into this problem when Pat and I went Ireland a few years back.  He held an international drivers license from living in Japan.  Me not so much but it cost me $150 more for him to be the driver even though he was experienced driving their way and I was not.  I would have hit someone had I been driving.

I have checked over 10 rental companies all in Vegas and researched renting under 25. Every company, even if they let you rent at 21, charges fees for drivers under 25. Currently Hertz is going a special where the fee is waived, but their rental prices are so much higher it's more expensive than renting + age fees other places.

Of all of the companies I looked at, the lowest fee for under 25 was $20/day. Sigh...

It wouldn't have to be subjective. There could be specific rules in place just like with the age limit. For example, if you are between 21-24 and have never caused an accident, then you're age restriction fees are waived. That is a definitive Yes or No, no discrimination.

  • What is that bringing your daily rate to for the rental?

    Uuuuuuuugh so lame.

Maybe I lucked out because I was renting in OH...Maybe with it being in Vegas they are scared of drunk drivers or something Like a tiger in your car.

That is frustrating with the age restrictions but to be completely honest, $20 dollars a day doesn't sound so bad to me.  DH and I went out a few years ago and rented a car.  He rented it since he was over 25 and we paid around $20 a day.

Do you have AAA?  I know sometimes they give discounts for that.  May it would equal out the extra fees.

Using expedia, it'd be $40/day plus taxes which equate to $10/day

The $20/day is just an additional cost for the car. It'd be $40/day if we get a compact car and closer to $55 if we go up to midsize.

Unfortunately, we don't have AAA for the discount =(. I've been looking on expeida, but last time I tried to reserve it wouldn't let me bc I'm under 25, so I may have to go through the rental car company which will raise the price even more. I'm not sure on that one though -- it may have just been the rental company I choose.

  • Did you check Ace rent a car? Even if they charge for being under 25, they always have really low rates!

  • Ok...Here is what I would do.

use expedia to find the best rate with the lowest under 25 charge.

Then call that place directly and see if you can work something out. Like ask them to waive the under 25 fee and in turn you will purchase theer daily insurance...I think I did that once when I rented in L.A.I also flirted like crazy with the guy. Sometimes you have to use your lady skills

  • This sucks.  I tried to see if I could find anything that would help but they are all about the same.  Even with my corporate discount it doesnt make it any cheaper than 61 dollars.  Sorry hun.

LOL. I suck at this haha.

Actually, DH did call about waiving the fee since he's sooooo close, and they said they couldn't. There was no way to override the system. He's a good con-artist when needed, so I think he had a better chance than I.

I like your plan with the insurance purchase and no fee. That would still save us at least $5/day and with some companies more. Maybe they'll magically learn how to override if there's an insurance policy ;). I may try that before booking.

It's not your fault. Thanks for looking into it though =D.

I really just posted to whine bc this is LAME!!! I mean $40-$55 isn't bad, but my point is it could be $20-$25. I wish we could have just waited 2 damn weeks for the training!
