re: swelling (I saw the post on the preg. blog but can't comment there b/c work blocks blogs - I have to read things on google reader)
I haven't really had to deal with swelling on a daily basis - I think it's mostly because I'm not on my feet much and also it's winter here! But when I was in CA for Thanksgiving I swelled up immediately from the heat and lots of walking. I had read that swimming helps and it really did - I didn't do any exercises, just kind of floated around and treaded water at the hotel pool.
The pressure of the water helps the water dissipate back to where it should be. Not to mention the weightless feeling of the water is heavenly. Now if only I could work up the energy (and nerve since I'm pretty sure my swim bottoms would be pretty tight on me these days) to go to the pool at my gym on a regular basis.
So if you think it's safe maybe try to go swimming. It's summer there - do you have access to a pool?
and a couple of other things my ND recommended (I mentioned to her the CA swelling) she suggested I not drastically limit my sodium - be mindful of it, but don't cut it out b/c that could cause your body to try to retain it all. She also suggested swapping out tea for some of my water intake. She didn't have any particular suggestion for a certain type. And then finally - as they say the water retention begins in the liver the herb dandelion root (which I have seen in a couple of different tea blends and also by itself) is great for edema - maybe something to discuss with your doctor?
Re: ::redshoe girl::
Thanks soooo much for the tips! We do have a public pool here that I could go to, but I think it's only open during regular business hours (i.e., when I'm at work)...I have, however, been soaking my feet in a big tub of water - I'm not sure if it's helping with the swelling a lot, but it does at least make the aching feel better!
I do try to keep an eye on my sodium intake - I'm not a nazi with it (I'd heard the same thing, that going drastic can actually backfire), but I generally avoid high sodium foods.
I hadn't heard of swapping out tea for some of the water intake! I can definitely do that. Just a cup or two a day, I'm assuming? I've seen dandelion tea at the store before (I actually used to drink it a couple of years ago, just for something different), so I might pick some up this weekend!
Thank you so much!
Chiming in here too...
I haven't had much swelling, but on random days lately my ankles will be swollen. When they do I lay on my left side for about an hour and it goes down to normal.
I am also drinking about 4 liters of water/day which is helpful...not always what I want to do when I think about how often I am already in the bathroom, but it does help with the retention.
I also wear compression socks when I know I'll be on my feet or sitting for long stretches. Otherwise, I do try vary my positions...sit after standing for a while and vice versa. Also having one foot up on a small step stool while doing either also helps. Finally, asparagus is a natural diuretic so if I am feeling really puffy (like my fingers are swollen), I'll have a cup or two of it with a meal.

Yes, she said 2-3 regular cups of warm (herbal) tea per day - she suggested I go to the herbs/tea store or co-op grocery in town and mix myself a blend but I was lazy and cheap and just got some from the grocery.
I have been drinking this pregnancy blend that I found at the grocery store (natural foods section) 2 times a day. I was thinking of adding 1 cup of the dandelion root tea per day by the same company because my wedding ring is a little tight this week.
