Learning to start all over again... Blog
I read somewhere that for a 1st time buyer, you should either get your dream house & go all out (so you don't end up looking at the house you really wanted) or get the crappiest house in the best neighborhood to fix up. We're more on the 2nd boat. It's a cute 2bd/1ba but so much potential with the basement for a 3rd plus bath and den or build up the attic (although not in the near future).
What's going on with your house? Can you negotiate on price due to the issue?

Unfortunately, it's a bank owned foreclosure that we are buying. The bank won't make any repairs. Most of the stuff is minor and my husband can fix it. The kicker is that the house needs a new roof. We requested they pay for it since now that they know about it they will have to disclose it to other buyers anyways but we doubt they will. Our REA and mortgage guy said that once we get the appraisal done if the appraiser says it needs to be replaced in order to issue a loan, sometimes the bank will make the repair. If they don't and we want to continue with the house, we would have to agree to replace in ourselves which really isn't in the budget right now.
However, the estimates we got back aren't that bad and one guy said he could repair it and guarantee it for 3-5 more years for a few hundred bucks which would give us time to save up for the new roof.
Congrats!!! So jealous - I can't WAIT to get out of our shoebox of a condo.
OOoh, a foreclosure! You could stand to make a big profit off of the property in time!
I posted on Buying a Home board about our inspection on friday. We're definitely getting cold feet, DH and I are NOT handy people (I hate dirt in general) and are dreading the thought of all the repairs. People should really NOT plant bamboo if they don't know if it's the invasive type or not. I'm dreading the idea of neighbors suing over my invasive plants (that could take years to unearth). AHHH!
