What to do with InLaws?

So, my in-laws will be here Monday for 4 days. Um...how should we entertain them? I mean, we're kind of at a loss as to what to show them about Raleigh, or NC in general. All the things we like are outside & it's freaking cold! They have little to no interest in museums, so that's out. We plan on taking 'em downtown....driving through cool neighborhoods like Historic Oakmont, checking out some buildings, eating BBQ. And we're gonna take 'em over to downtown Durham and the American Tobacco area. We *might* drive to Charleston or even Wilmington for a day. *sigh* I just don't know what to do with them! Help! They are kind of boring, but I don't just want to sit around my apt. with them for 4 days. Any suggestions?

Re: What to do with InLaws?

  • If you wanted to go out to Chapel Hill, you could show them some true Southern cooking at Mama Dip's and then tool around in A Southern Season for a little while. Also- what about wine tasting at Chatham Hill Winery? I've never been, but I think I've heard good things. You could also always see a movie- that's not specific to NC, but it could be something to keep you all entertained.
  • Duke_girl has some great ideas.  Would outlet shopping at Smithfield be a possibility?  I haven't been there in forever, so I'm not entirely sure how fabulous they are these days.  I think the Chatham Hill Winery would be great!
  • Maybe a movie at the IMAX theater in downtown Raleigh?
  • If you are going to Durham you could go to Duke and walk through the Duke Chapel.

Are they into plays/theater? There might be a local production that would not be too expensive.

  • The suggestions from other posters seem good.  You seem like you are in the same predicament with your in-laws as I am every time my parents visit the area.  We end up at Southpoint and Crabtree because my parents don't have a good mall within 1.5 hours of their home.  Have fun!
  • When you're downtown, maybe swing by the Krispy Kreme on Person street.  My guests always love to get some donuts and watch the production line.

Big Ed's in City Market is always a big hit too.  They're open for breakfast and lunch.

I heard there's an ice rink downtown:  http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=resources/lifestyle_community&id=7149427

Even if they don't want to skate, could be something cool to watch anyway.

Depending on how cold it is, you could bundle up and go to the Flea Market at the Fairgrounds too (there's always the indoor area too if it's ridiculously cold out).
