Canada Revenue Agency question and vent

The lovely... lovely people from CRA sent me a reassessment today. Why do they never send a reassessment with MORE money? No, instead it is for $600 which is due in 2 1/2 weeks. I get that I probably got back too much last year whatever, and that this money is "owed" to them. Not that I have that much just lying around to pass to the government.

According to the paper we got today they sent me some paperwork back in October but I never recieved this paperwork. Around that same time the post office in our town sent some paperwork with the right address on it back to Blue Cross as well (because of what I still do not know even though I talked to both Blue Cross and the post office). So I am assuming they did the same thing here.

Anyways does anyone have any advice or has anyone dealt with a situation like this before? The initial paperwork which they sent with the reassessment today required some information on rent paid, etc. Do I have some ability to ask for some time to contact my accountant and my landlord to sort anything out prior to dishing out this money? Or can I defer it so that it comes off of my refund when I file my taxes for 2009?

All in all, CRA is not my friend, neither is the photo radar ticket that I got that is due right around the same time. Which is coincidentily right around my birthday. And I thought that maybe I might be able to convince my husband to let me go out and purchase some of the things I've been wanting that I didn't get for Christmas but I guess not.

  • Call them.  My Husband got a letter like that.  He never was contacted in the fall (yeah right.  LIke they ever send that first letter requesting the information).  They are saying that my husband has been reassessed because of unclaimed medical expenses or some such crap and the money they gave him as a refund has to be returned.  Or some such stupidity.  If you call them you can give them the proof they need and the will be happy.  They did this to me in the summer over my child tax.  Don't pay them until you have contacted them.

  • Call them and tell them about no prior notice in the fall. They should extend it for you...

I'm sorry :( As if we don't pay enough in taxes as it is...

Ditto this. If they won't extend it, you can be put on a payment plan if you don't have the money right now.

In case you weren't aware, I am actually a chartered accountant who specializes in income tax.

If the CRA asked you for information (whether you go the letter or not) and you did not provide it, they will reassess.  If you later provide them with the information, they will reverse the reassessment.  They go under the assumption that if you dont' provide the info, it must not have been a valid deduction.

First off, if you don't pay in 2 weeks, all that is going to happen is that you are going to be charged interest.  If they end up reversing the reassessment, then there is no downside to you to not paying as the interest on no tax is $0.  If you end up owing, then obviously you would be responsible for the interest charges as well.  But if you think your return was filed properly, and this is just an error due to the missed communication, don't pay it.

Secondly, call CRA and tell them that you did not receive the first letter, and ask them to resend it. The person that you talk to on the phone will likely be an idiot who knows nothing and can't actually access any information that you need LOL.   Ask them if they can tell what information it is that the CRA was looking for.

The notice that you got in the mail should indicate specifically what you were being reassessed for.  If you want, you can PM me and tell me EXACTLY what your letter says re the reason for the reassessment and I might be able to help you out.  I am in Ontario, so if has to do with some weird Manitoba thing, I mght not be able to help - but we can see if you want.

If you don't pay, you might get a call from collections.  Just tell collections that the reassessment was issued in error, that you are objecting and are awaiting to hear back from the CRA.  This will get them off your back for a while.

Let me know if you need more info.

  • I didnt know that Pam...

My husband(before we were married) and father both owed money after there taxes were done and did pay or address the fees until the following year.. my father's was wiped clean because the following year they gov. owed him money... saving him; dishing to get money back later...
And DH waited the following year and was going to get a refund but then they just took all of the refund and he ended up only owing 30$ so he ended up paying that ... it was a lot less of a hassle... but if in 2 weeks they send collections on you... that never happened to either of them...

    BUT every case is different!

  • Sorry - I didn't mean you would get sent to collections in 2 weeks.  I just was telling her what she should do if collections calls.

  • The number for the reassessments is 1-800-631-9010 which is probably different from the number telling you to pay. This is the Processing Review Section.

If you resend they'll charge you interest and you may get another notice in a few weeks reminding you to pay.  However that's just an automated system thing.  If you send the information now to 204-984-7523 they'll process it in the order they receive things.

I share your frustration.  I got the letter in September, called to clarify what they wanted, sent it in and then a couple of weeks ago got a letter saying I didn't provide the information they needed and would owe them money.  Then they listed what they were looking for.  No idea why they wouldn't include that in the FIRST letter.  But whatever.  I'm not paying until they look at it again.

Which may be useless as DH was reviewed on the same information and got a completely different response then I did.
