Hidden Element=Hidden Fire

3 words- Hidden Grease Fire

I am making ribs for the first time today, for company. This morning I broiled them and put them in the slow cooker. While I was broiling them I was using my flat cookie sheets. Mistake #1. Some fat dripped off but I didn't think it was that much. I was on a call with my cousin in Jordan while I was doing this so I forgot to clean up the mess. Now I go to put on the oven to bake my potatos and within 10 minutes it's smoking big time. No biggie. I put on the vent open it up, open my windows. A couple minutes later it isn't stopping.  Then I notice... a glimmer from under the hidden element cover. I call DH (who is a panic attack waiting to happen) and he starts going ballistic. I lifted the cover with some tongs and threw baking soda under there. Fire out. DH somewhat soothed.

Now I'm going to make mashed potatos instead. Good thing I'm the calm one.

Re: Hidden Element=Hidden Fire

  • Sorry...that made me chuckle.  I hope company isn't arriving to soon, so you have time to air stuff out (and then warm the place up again).
  • At least you noticed and got it out...there was a fire in southwestern ontario on friday night...the son had hung his snowpants on the bbq to dry.  Snowsuit fell behind the bbq.  His dad lit the bbq to warm it up to make steak, and it caught fire.  $200 000 damage.  Did I also mention they had the bbq inside their house?

  • Glad you got the fire out.

BBQ inside the house or inside the garage? Cause that is just crazy.

  • Fires scare me!

So happy to read you are safe.

    ?

And BBQ inside a house?? ?Can anyone explain that stupidity to me??

    Left, Right
  • good thing had baking soda on hand! I need to pick some up.

Who puts the BBQ in the house?! seriously people!

this post also reminds me I need to get a new fire extinguisher. I've been meaning to for months now. I wouldn't want to be that person on the news watching my house burning down saying 'I meant to get an extinguisher'...

  • Please, everyone get a fire extinguisher!  We had a fire in our oil furnace which would have been a lot more tragic had we not been able to put it out very early.  Now I tell everyone check your smoke alarms (which first alerted us), service your furnace and have an extinguisher and know how to use it.
  • Glad everything turned out okay for you.  I am more like your DH in those situations where I kind of panic.

We actually had the alarm go off the other night in my parent's house, and while the guys stayed cool and looked for the source my mom and I kind of ran around like chickens with our heads cut off, lol.  It was scary because we could smell something but we couldn't see flames, so we were worried that it was in the walls.  Turns out that there was a faulty halogen bulb in one of the basement lights, and it started to burn the plastic around it.  Luckily the light was right beside a smoke detector and went off right away, but that was super scary.

And yes that made me think of getting new fire extinguishers too.

  • That'll teach me to read replies, I kept thinking OP was the one who had the BBQ inside and I thought I missed something..?

Glad the fire is out and all is OK - I would not have been as calm as you! Reminds me to clean my over as there is some stuff on the bottom... maybe I should do that now while mister is napping...?

  • This happened to me once while I was still living at home. I was baking a pie while on the phone and out of the corner of my eye i saw a glimmer of orange. A little bit of baking soda and it was gone, but scary regardless! Needless to say I try and keep my oven clean now that I live on my own.

Thank goodness company wasn't there yet, and hopefully you can get everything aired out before they arrive.

And who keeps their BBQ in the house?!
