Where to live around Boston?
I live on Cape Cod right now. I think when I graduate most of the job offers will be near or in Boston since that is where most of the hospitals are. There could be a chance that I get an offer at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where I am doing my internship.
I would love opinions on small towns or neighborhoods that would be good for starting a family. When we move, we will most likely stay. We aren't familiar with the area, so any advice would be great.
Re: Where to live around Boston?
Are you looking to buy or will you be renting? If you're going to rent, you can probably stick more to the urban suburbs (like Waltham and Cambridge).
If you're looking to buy, I'll plug my (and christar's) town - Chelmsford. It's a really nice town, close to major routes (495, Rt 3, not far from 95 and 93) and there's a commuter station in Lowell (10ish minutes).
Basically, if you stick close to the towns on 495, you won't be more than an hour into the city. Chelmsford, Littleton, Hudson, Bolton, Marlborough, Westborough, Hopkinton, Milford are all nice towns that would be within an hour of the city and most of them have access to the commuter rail as well.
The only thing I know about Milton is it's location on I-93 and I would do anything to avoid I-93 like it was the plague.
I live (rent) in Hudson and I love it, because I'm right off of 495 and close to the Mass Pike. I also work off hours so I never hit traffic.
Ditto this; commuting on 93 is a nightmare. I suppose you could do the red line in, but I think it might cost a little more than the standard rate to come to/from the south shore.
Congrats on graduating, by the way, and welcome to the board
If you are going to work south of Boston, then you should live in boston or south because of commuting nightmares. I lived in Cambridge for 15 years and it's wonderful and I highly recommend it BUT I frequently had to go to Quincy for client meetings and it was always a nightmare crossing through the city regardless of the time of day. Cambridge is slightly north of boston so you would have to go through it to go south of the city--or take a long way around on 95--major PITA. You can do red line but I know that's at least an hour commute to go from park street to quincy. I have friends who live in Milton and they love it. It is more family oriented i think. even though it's on 93 it's south so if you are working son the southside you'd be okay.
Find the job first then find the town. It will make a world of difference.
