OBX Vacation Help

Hi there -- I'm hoping you guys can help me out with some vacation recommendations.

I'm starting to work on planning a couple's trip to the Outer Banks this summer  with my college roomies and their SOs.  DH went to Corolla a few years ago with his family and said it was nice but they didnt really go out.  I need a place that has bars/restaurants within walking distance and isnt crazy expensive.  Any suggestions for an area I should look into?

I also heard that OBX got his pretty hard this past year with a storm and that many places have been condemned and the beach isnt as nice anymore.  Should we search for other places or have they cleaned things up?

Re: OBX Vacation Help

  • I love the OBX. I was there at Thanksgiving time and at least where we were (northern beaches--Southern Shores, Duck, Corolla) the storm hadn't caused much damage. Going some place in Kitty Hawk might be the best for having bars/restaurants within walking distance. If you stayed close to downtown Duck or Corolla there are also places within walking distance.
  • My parents own a place in Corolla and I haven't heard anything about places being condemned or the beach looking bad. I will say that we used to vacation in South Nags Head and there were some areas where there was hardly any beach due to erosion (thus beachfront houses being condemned), so maybe your source stayed in an area like that. It's been years since I've been there, though. I agree with Duke Girl's suggestions on places to stay. Duck and Corolla don't have as many bars/restaurants as Kitty Hawk or Nags Head, but the bars/restaurants that they do have are concentrated in a small area that you could get a house in walking distance to, whereas Kitty Hawk/Nags Head you could probably be in walking distance to 1 or 2 places, they are all spread along a highway that I wouldn't really want to walk along.
  • I can definitely tell you NOT to stay on Hatteras Island as there isn't a whole lot there.  If you just want to kick back and relax, its the place to go but if you want a lot of options in restaurants and bars, then like pp Kitty Hawk or Nags Head would be the place to go.
