Gold allergy?

After wearing my white gold wedding ring for 5.5 years, I seem to be having some sort of reaction to it. My finger developed an itchy red welt-like thing under the ring a couple of weeks ago. I stopped wearing it and the skin is still red and scaly but no longer itchy. Could I have developed a gold allergy after all this time?

Re: Gold allergy?

  • Hmm, I don't know if you can develop an allergy after all this time, but I'm sure it's possible.

Could it be a new soap or detergent you've started using? Maybe it was getting caught under your rings when you washed your hands or did dishes and that's the source of the irritant...

I hope it goes away soon!

Maybe getting your rings re-dipped would help if it is something on the rings...

  • Being a dental assistant, I have never been able to wear my rings to work.  The reason most people in any medical profession don't wear rings is b/c the tend to wash their hands often and if they do not take their rings off to dry underneath thoroughly, they can develop a bacterial skin infection due to the moisture.  What you are descibing, sounds exactly like one of these infections.

  • I seem to have reactions to yellow gold. Ever since I was a kid. I can wear white gold with no problem, though. My mom experienced something similar just a few years ago, her doctor prescribed a cream, it ended up being Eczema.
  • DH has really bad Eczema and if he does not take his ring off to wash and dry his hands properly his eczema flares up under his ring.  Even if he justs gets a lot of water underneath if for example from the shower or something then the same thing happens, he stopped wearing his ring when he is at home, I have never worn my rings when I am home, they are always in water, or what have you and he noticed it disappeared.  He also put his medicated cream on it and this helped as well.  GL
