So as you all know I am a career counselor and I really don't enjoy my job. But it makes it that much more frustrating when you spend over an hour with a person, making suggestions on ways they can improve their marketing materials (resume, cover letter) only to receive the "updated" version that is crap.
Arrrgh, it just drives me insane.
So on that note
Dear Student,
If you want to actually get a job then you might heed some of my advice. Not only did I land a job but I am also reading and reviewing information that makes me more informed about what employers are looking for. If you think that a simple form letter that you take off the internet (including our website sample) is ample then don't waste MY time by asking for advice.
Let me tell you this, six simple sentences does not make a cover letter!
I am trying to help you stand out from the every other Tom, *** and Harry who are also applying to this stupid job. The only differnence between you and Tom is that he took the advice of the counselor, landed the interview and starts in two weeks.
Sincerely yours,
Counselor ZoeB
Re: Why do I bother? Dear Student letter included
Dear Councilor,
Why should I care why you say. i just went to that appointment with you so I can say I'm trying to get a job. my leters are good they wouldnt be on the internet if they werent.
As for 6 sentences not making a good cover letter- I know someone who got a job with no cover letter a few years ago, so at least I have one.
