Moving to Lockport

Hi!

My husband was just told he is being transfered to Lockport NY and we need some serious help.  Do any of you know anything about the area?  Are there good areas and bad areas?  We can't even seem to find any information on apartments to rent in the area.  So please please please if you know the area can you help me out with where to find information?

Thank you!

  • I don't know much about Lockport, but just wanted to say welcome!  Where are you moving from?
  • Lockport defintly has it's good and bad areas.  There really isn't anything there.  The mall only has a bon ton. there is a walmart and tops(grocery store) home depot, walgreens.  It's a depressed area.  Where are you moving from? Just bc he is working in lockport doesn't mean you have to live there.
  • Sorry, I am no help with your questions, but just wanted to say welcome to the board and to New York.
  • I'm sorry I didn't say hi and welcome and I also sound pretty down about the area.  Lockport has some really cute houses.  They are really old and historic looking.  I worked in lockport for almost 2 years.  Molinaro's is a great pizza place.  In the summer there is a car show every Monday night, a concert series, taste of Lockport.  There is a drive in.  It's the beginning of the Niagara wine trail.  McBride is from Lockport but I'm not sure if she is ever on anymore.  Yahoo is supposed to be setting some sort of HQ out there so that is pretty big news.
  • I grew up near lockport but don't know much about good/bad parts anymore.  There are some amazing, big houses there though.  it's also pretty close to the suburbs of Buffalo (like Amherst) so you could also live there and DH could commute pretty easily.  maybe the Buffalo girls could help you out more
  • Hello and welcome!

When moving to a new area there is a lot that you should consider. I think that what some of the previous posters were getting is we can help you a little more if we know what you are looking for.

I haven't lived in Lockport but it is I believe, the second largest area in Niagara County. That being said it is as Jewelsonu indicated a bit removed from the rest of the county. If you prefer a smaller town then this might be the right location for you and your husband. The downtown is pretty cute and there is a lot of history in the area. One of the Locks from the Erie canal is still there and fun to tour.

Another area that you might want to look at (depending on what you are looking for) is Lewiston / Youngstown. Two quaint towns about 20 minutes from Lockport center.I believe that the commute to Niagara Falls and Buffalo are easier but I could be wrong. The school system for Lewiston / Youngstown is excellent if you have or are planning on having kids.

Ask away about general Western New York information. With so many ladies on the board you are bound to get helpful and different information. I have learned so much from these ladies and I grew up in Lewiston!

  • Thanks for all the welcomes!!

We are being transfered from Los Angeles and my husband is Yahoo employee thats being transfered to help start up the new campus.  We really are not sure what we are looking for to be honest.  In LA there are very defined good cities and bad cities and we can't seem to get any information on the area.  We have been looking online at places in Niagra Falls and Lockport, but like I said we are clueless and the internet doesn't give a lot of info (I'm sure its because its a smaller town).  We will be flying out there for only 3 days next week to look around and then we won't be back until the move.

Thank you MsZoeB we will take a look at the Lewiston/Youngstown areas.

We know we will have an adjustment going from big city to smaller town, but we are excited about it!  So please keep any suggestions coming as for towns and better neighborhoods.

Big question is how do we find apartments up there?!!!  We have only found about 5 total for the entire area!  Is that really it?

Thank you so much for your help!!!!!!

  • the website for the newspaper is www.lockportjournal.com  that might give you some ideas for apartments available.  I'm sure there are a lot of apts in houses available.

when my family lived near lockport, my sister worked in amherst and drove there every day...it was only like a 1/2 hour drive.  and there are malls, stores etc there that aren't available in Lockport.  Lockport is also close to a lot of farm land -- so there are lots of fresh fruits and veggies during the summer/fall.

  • In addition to looking in Niagara County you should check out Erie County

    http://www.niagaracounty.com/

    http://wwww.erie.gov/erie/

Check with Hunt Real Estate or other agencies to see about getting help to relocate

Even moving to Buffalo from LA will be an adjustment. I think that moving right into Lockport would be hard. It is a bit removed if you like city living at all. There are a lot of great suburb locations such as Amherst, Williamsville etc. A realtor would be able to help you get a feel for the area. I know that you aren't looking to buy but often real estate agencies will help transplants find rentals, get familiar with the area. They want to build a client base and what a better way to start than with someone that is new to the area.

Also, check out Craig's list for rentals. There were a lot of listings. Then google map the address and use the street view to get more of a sense for the place. If you think that it is a possibility come back and post and we can help you determine if the area is good.

This is what I have off the top of my head. I will continue to think of ways to know the area.
