Wow - craziness!

A kid just came in my room that is ED and he had to be restrained.  He was trying to destroy my room.  His reasoning "he hates Mondays".  He isn't one of my kids but he happened to have a fit outside my room and ran in here to get away from the teacher.  It's good that he was restrained before he got to the chemicals we are working with today in lab.  He could have done some major damage with them!

Re: Wow - craziness!

  • I am not a fan of Mondays either but I don't think I would have destroyed property. I hope that they give the kid the right kind of attention that he needs and not just discipline his actions. It sounds like it might be worth investigating further WHY he hates Monday.

  • Wow.....self entitled kid.

Sorry he messed up your room.

  • That is scary! I have not experienced anything like that (luckily) but I am glad you are ok!

  • I'm sorry you had to deal with that. It really bothers me when they use their disability as an excuse for atrocious behavior. Glad he didn't do any serious damage.
  • Yeah he did this because of his disability.  My room just happened to be empty and the door was open (mostly to get rid of the chemical fumes).  Normally it would have been shut.  They contained him and the only damage he was able to do was knocking over a stack of papers.
  • Sounds like somebody has a case of "The Mondays." Glad he didn't get into the chemicals. I STILL have a scar on my wrist from a jerk-off student's "joke" with HCl(aq).

I totally agree with this and, as a special education teacher I'm pretty shocked and saddened by the assumptions people are making about this kid and his disability.  We don't know if he was 'using' his disability, if a kid is Emotionally Disturbed then this could be one way that the disability affects his life. ED is a pretty intense diagnosis, in my experience, and often results in students who need to be sent to a residential center to cope with their issues.

I don't know what the SPED teacher did once he left the room.  I saw the TA restrain him to keep him from getting to the chemicals and honestly, that was my biggest concern.  He is not one of my students.  I have no clue who he is or what his diagnosis is.  The teacher came in and took him out of the classroom.  Seeing the teacher, I know all of his students are ED.  I also know that this teacher is one of the nicest teachers ever.  He HAS to be with his job.  He is so patient.  I'm sure he talked to the student about his problem.  It sounded like they knew he had a problem with Mondays.

Oh, I didn't mean you!  I was just shocked by some other posters who thought he may be using his disability to get out of work, or because he was "self-entitled."  Like I said, ED is a pretty major label, and it most likely was his disability that caused the outburst, not him using his disability as a cover for misbehaving.

I'm late on this, but this. all of this.

Then again, IMO, unless you work with/have seen kids/teens/adults with ED, there isn't a real way to grasp the extent of the disability.  But yeah, he def wasn't using it as an excuse to get out of a Monday/class, etc. and to think so is def naive.

Glad you weren't hurt and glad your lab/chemicals were safe!
