Book "Summer Sisters"
So, kinda off the wall but I was wondering who had read this book and at what age? I bought it for my 15 yr old sister for x-mas (she'll be 16 in march) and my mom absolutly flipped out on me. She accused me of buying my little sister 'soft porn" etc. So, just wondered from those of you who read it and what you thought. I read it for the first time when I was probably 16 and loved it; thought the sex scenes were interesting but nothing I didn;t know about and here people talking about at school.
Re: Book "Summer Sisters"
I do not agree with this. I think since her sister is still a minor her MOTHER has absolutely every right to have a say in what her underage daughter reads. OP probably should have talked it over with her mother prior to giving her sister this gift.
Now, I am no prude, but as a mother I would want to make sure my daughter was ready to read something with very adult themes in it.
Ask your sister. Her opinion matters too. I am sure that she knows about what themes run in the book. She has probably heard worse in school and what if she is sexually active? Maybe your mom doesn't know.
Talk with your mom and ask her what her concerns are. And talk with your sister and see if she would feel comfortable. Maybe your mom and sister could read it together and discuss it. I know that might be awkward but that seems like a good solution.
I would agree that it is up to my mom to decide what is appropriate or not. If she had just taken the book away from sis it wouldn't have been a big deal. I guess it was more her approach and the fact that she acted like I was a bad person for have even liked the book myself.
I read Summer Sisters when I was in my 20s and was fine with it. I don't think I would have reacted all that differently in my teens. But it's different for everyone.
I agree with Kuus- I think that at 15 you're old enough to read whatever you want. I have issues with censoring what kids read. While my parents had limits with what movies I could see, they never censored my reading, and I'm extremely grateful for that.
CRAFTY ME
my read shelf:
Okay, I know I have read it but I can't remember anything juicy..
That is the book that at the end one of the sisters goes on a boat & is becomes missing or something??
I would agree that 15 is too old for monitored reading. When I was living at home my mom never monitored what I read when I was that age, in fact I never remember her monitoring what I read.
